Hoger onderwijs sluit deal met Google
Hoger onderwijs sluit deal met Google Als het aan Google ligt, stappen alle Nederlandse universiteiten en hogescholen over op computerprogramma’s van het Amerikaanse internetbedrijf. Google heeft daarvoor een contract gesloten met Surf, de ict-organisatie van het hoger onderwijs. Google heeft een speciaal pakket met programma’s ontwikkeld voor het onderwijs.
De Universiteit Utrecht gaat zorgvuldig om met de gegevens van bezoekers van de universitaire website. Persoonlijke gegevens worden zorgvuldig verwerkt en beveiligd. In het kader van de dienstverlening legt de Universiteit Utrecht gegevens vast in een of meer bestanden. Hierbij houdt de Universiteit Utrecht zich aan de eisen die de Wet Bescherming Persoonsgegevens stelt.

20 Jan '10 - + 0 - 0 Studenten Universiteit Utrecht over op Google Gmail De universiteit van Utrecht heeft besloten haar studenten te migreren naar Google Apps . Zo zullen de studenten bijvoorbeeld Gmail gebruiken in combinatie met een e-mailadres van de universiteit, echter zullen diensten als Calender en Docs voorlopig nog niet worden gebruikt. Een personeelsadvertentie waarin de overstap wordt aangekondigd heeft dit nieuws verraden. Middels een woordvoerder heeft de Universiteit Utrecht inmiddels laten weten dat dit bericht klopt en dat de overstap gepland staat voor het tweede kwartaal van 2010. De betreffende personeelsadvertentie spreekt echter over februari.

De organisatie die de ICT regelt in het hoger onderwijs, Surf, heeft een deal gesloten met Google. Dat laatste bedrijf heeft een soort sociaal netwerk geïntegreerd in een digitale leeromgeving. Hierin worden onder andere webmail, een agenda en het delen van documenten samengevoegd.

Uit strategisch oogpunt kiest de Open Universiteit ervoor deze mailfaciliteiten niet zelf te ontwikkelen en te beheren maar gebruik te maken van de innovatiekracht van een ervaren externe partner.

Google has announced its first serious funding for university research , with $5.7m going to 12 projects led by 31 professors at 10 universities. Only one of these is outside the US: the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory will get some funds for its Computing for the Future of the Planet research, led by Professor Andy Hopper. Cambridge isn't saying how much it will get ("a six figure sum"), but grants range between $100,000 and $1.5m. Google is supporting four areas that it says "are of key interest to Google as well as the research community".
Google yesterday announced investment in a number of university research projects across the US. The University of Cambridge however is set to become the only university outside of the US to receive a grant in this round of funding. The investment will go to Cambridge University’s green technology initiative, part of its University Computer Lab project ‘Computing for the Future of the Planet’. Google’s funding will be spread over over three years. but exactly how much will be invested is not clear. Individual grants will range between $100,000 and $1.5 million, substantially higher than previously grants of only around $50,000 – and Cambridge will reportedly receive a “six figure” sum.

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to support ambitious research in computer science and engineering, we occasionally support multi-year projects through our Focused Research Awards program. The awards are for research in areas of study that are of key interest to Google as well as the research community. These unrestricted grants are for two to three years, and the recipients have the advantage of access to Google tools, technologies, and expertise. Unlike our Faculty Research Awards program , we do not accept unsolicited applications for Focused Research Awards. As we continue to identify key areas of research that are of mutual interest to both university researchers and Google, we will provide awards to support these collaborations.nwo
