De Universiteit Utrecht gaat zorgvuldig om met de gegevens van bezoekers van de universitaire website. Persoonlijke gegevens worden zorgvuldig verwerkt en beveiligd. In het kader van de dienstverlening legt de Universiteit Utrecht gegevens vast in een of meer bestanden. Hierbij houdt de Universiteit Utrecht zich aan de eisen die de Wet Bescherming Persoonsgegevens stelt.
De Universiteit Utrecht maakt gebruik van veiligheidsprocedures, onder meer om te voorkomen dat onbevoegden toegang krijgen tot deze gegevens. Google Analytics Deze website maakt gebruik van Google Analytics, een webanalyse-service die wordt aangeboden door Google Inc. De door het cookie gegenereerde informatie over uw gebruik van de website (met inbegrip van uw IP-adres) wordt overgebracht naar en door Google opgeslagen op servers in de Verenigde Staten. Zo zullen de studenten bijvoorbeeld Gmail gebruiken in combinatie met een e-mailadres van de universiteit, echter zullen diensten als Calender en Docs voorlopig nog niet worden gebruikt. Een personeelsadvertentie waarin de overstap wordt aangekondigd heeft dit nieuws verraden. Middels een woordvoerder heeft de Universiteit Utrecht inmiddels laten weten dat dit bericht klopt en dat de overstap gepland staat voor het tweede kwartaal van 2010. De betreffende personeelsadvertentie spreekt echter over februari. Google Apps for Education De Universiteit Utrecht heeft uiteindelijk gekozen voor de variant Google Apps for Education.
De reden van de overstap is eigenlijk heel eenvoudig. Zoals eerder aangegeven zullen de studenten in eerste instantie gebruik kunnen maken van Gmail met een e-mailadres van de universiteit zelf. Dat laatste bedrijf heeft een soort sociaal netwerk geïntegreerd in een digitale leeromgeving. Hierin worden onder andere webmail, een agenda en het delen van documenten samengevoegd. Bovendien wordt het voor studenten in het systeem erg gemakkelijk een eigen website te maken, waarop ze natuurlijk een niet al te kwetsende mening mogen ventileren. De Open Universiteit en de Universiteit Utrecht stapten eerder al over op Google en daar is men erg tevreden. Wij zijn echter van mening dat alles een verbetering is bij het oerlelijke en in alle aspecten beperkte webmailprogramma en het verschrikkelijk onhandige Blackboard dat zowat iedere week een uur downtime heeft.
Open Uni kiest Google. Persbericht 4 jun 2008 De Open Universiteit Nederland gaat als eerste Nederlandse instelling voor hoger onderwijs in samenwerking met Google al haar 22.000 studenten studiemailvoorzieningen aanbieden. Uit strategisch oogpunt kiest de Open Universiteit ervoor deze mailfaciliteiten niet zelf te ontwikkelen en te beheren maar gebruik te maken van de innovatiekracht van een ervaren externe partner. Google verzorgt wereldwijd de mailvoorzieningen van honderden universiteiten, zoals Trinity College in Ierland en Linköpings Universitet in Zweden. Cambridge isn't saying how much it will get ("a six figure sum"), but grants range between $100,000 and $1.5m. Google is supporting four areas that it says "are of key interest to Google as well as the research community". Half the awards are concerned with energy efficiency in computing -- one of Goole's primary interests -- with the other areas being machine learning, the use of mobile phones as data collection devices for public health and environment monitoring, and privacy.

Harvest of Shame. Harvest of Shame was a 1960 television documentary presented by broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow on CBS that showed the plight of American migrant agricultural workers. It was Murrow's final documentary for the network; he left CBS at the end of January 1961, at President John F. Kennedy's request, to become head of the United States Information Agency. The program was an installment of the television documentary series CBS Reports, widely seen as the successor to Murrow's highly regarded 1951-58 CBS program, See It Now. Murrow's close associate, Fred W.
