Platform 21 - Platform21 = Hacking IKEA. Hacking existing design is a recent phenomenon. Around the world, for a variety of personal motives, professional and nonprofessional designers are making individual alterations to off-the-shelf products. In the process, they pay little or no attention to a product’s original function. Some do it for fun, others out of necessity, and still others out of a critical attitude toward mass production. IKEA hacks – the appropriation, adaptation and transformation of standard IKEA products – are among the most noticeable expressions of this movement. IKEA is a very successful and consumer friendly multinational, with a large fan base all across the Western and Asian world. But it is also a cultural entity, an economic force and an icon of global change. Platform21 = Hacking IKEA showed the work of those professionals and amateurs and commissioned new work by makers to whom the practise of hacking is central.

DIY Glass Bubble Chandelier. When we desired a new light to go over the dining table, I wasn’t thinking about making one. Then I remembered designer Jean Pelle’s instructions to make a chandelier at ReadyMade. A chandelier would be much nicer than our old light fixture. The original design for the chandelier used porcelain sockets and coiled string. We used galvanized pipe and IKEA. You might as well find out that this post was supposed to happen a long time ago. We knew we wanted lamps in the master bedroom and we had them purchased back in September and figured we’d bust them out straightaway.

Easy find, easy post, right? Well, not exactly. At my birthday garage sale we came across these two glass carboys. The lady practically gave them to us. The one with the lamp light in it was $.50. She said we could have the one without the light for free if we bought the other one. The nice thing about them was that they had holes cut out in the back to allow a cord to come out. Anyway, we were excited to put these in the room, but as we progressed with the project, we started to worry that the scale would be off and they wouldn’t quite look right.

Not ideal by any means, but we didn’t know how picky we could afford to be. (Credit Pottary Barn, found on iVillage) Finally! Plan A had a problem however – the second lamp had no light in it. Now on to the good stuff. How to Make a Pallet Headboard | The Rooster and The Hen. It only took about 5 hours of actual work, and 10 hours of stealth hunting, but it’s done. You might be thinking deer hunt, but I’m actually referring to Whitney’s master bedroom headboard pallet project. We’ve seen inspiration for pallet projects everywhere, like PB&J Stories, WebEcoist, and Ana White, and love the rustic worn look. Whitney originally put this idea into our mood board for the master bedroom, so I knew the plan was in the works, I just wasn’t prepared with the process of actually getting pallets. Of course, now that we have what we need (thanks Electrical Wholesale Supply, Sherwin Williams, and some helpful neighbors), we see them everywhere.

Here’s what our driveway looked like at the beginning of this project. We were prepared with all sorts of different formulas to give it the look we wanted, but settled on an old, mostly-used can of white latex paint that we watered down to a 1:1 ratio. Master bath. DIY - Ikea Rast Side Table Project. In September 2008, I was looking for side tables for our bedroom. At the time we didn't even have a couch, so dropping a lot of money on bedside tables wasn't something that we could do. I was flipping through my September 2008 Style at Home Magazine and I came across a bedroom shot and in the corner of a page I spotted a bedside table that was PERFECT. When I quickly flipped to the source of the table (expecting to be yet-again dissapointed by cost) I saw that they were Ikea RAST side tables. Seriously? Ikea? They had made over the Ikea Rast tables, and although there weren't instructions on how to do the project, I decided to try my hand at recreating the tables myself.

I got these.... and the bedside tables turned out like so.... STEP 1 // WHAT YOU BUY First you need to pick up an Ikea RAST table. STEP 2 // ASSEMBLY Assembled the table, except for the drawers. Staining Part 2 - I did 2 coats of varnish after the stain had dried. Q: What is the quality like? DIY Sliding Door.
