The British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club. British Columbia has been a fertile location for sightings of a bipedal hirsute hominid known colloquially as sasquatch.
The name "sasquatch" was coined by J.W. Burns,an American schoolteacher living in BC, and is derived from a Chehalis word meaning wild man. Burns showed a tremendous interest in sasquatch starting from the 1920's, but he was not alone in his pursuit of date and information regarding this animal. Journalist Bruce McKelvie, whose personal papers on the subject reside in the BC Archives, was keenly interested in the subject as was the late former Mayor of North Vancouver, Charles Cates. They were joined in the 1950s by newspaper publisher John Green and Swiss immigrant Rene Dahinden. Green and Dahinden - until his death in 2001 - have spent 40 years in active investigation and research into the sasquatch phenomenon. The sasquatch is depicted in both male and female forms on a variety of totem poles of a host of First Nations bands.

In July of 1997 I drove into my claim about 9:00 p.m. I have never owned a truck; always use a car. By my best guess, it was between one or two a.m. the morning when I was awakened by large rocks sliding from the hillside around the corner of the canyon. It walked a straight line across the creek and up the hill, and I do have to say, this hill would be nearly impossible for a human to walk up. When I woke up the next morning, I stood outside my tent where this creature was standing to figure out how tall it was. 6’4” and 6’7”. I grew up in Oroville California as a kid, my dad was an engineer on the Oroville Dam in the ‘60s. Bigfoot - The Hoopa Project. The Hoopa Project: Bigfoot Encounters in California"The Hoopa Project is the first book by the Executive Director of North America Bigfoot Search (NABS), David Paulides.
Paulides has spent the last three years researching and working in an area centered on the Hoopa Reservation in Northern California. This first book endeavor chronicles his research on Bigfoot. Paulides, a former police investigator, wanted to hold witnesses accountable for their statements. To this end, he documented over 45 witnesses who swore on affidavits to witnessing Bigfoot and Bigfoot activity. Interviews and research also brought much insight to related aspects of the hominid, such as topography, weather, elevation and rainfall.
