First gene therapy against aging is successful: mouse lifespan extended by 24% with a single treatment « Futuretimeline.net | Technology | Singularity | 2020 | 2050 | 2100. Studies have shown it is possible to lengthen the average lifespan of many species, including mammals, by acting on specific genes. To date, however, this has meant altering genes permanently from the embryonic stage – an approach impracticable in humans. Now, researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), led by its director María Blasco, have demonstrated that the mouse lifespan can be extended in adult life by a single treatment acting directly on the animal’s genes.

And they have done so using gene therapy, a strategy never before employed to combat aging. This therapy has been found to be safe and effective in mice. The results are published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine. Mice treated at the age of one lived longer by 24% on average, and those treated at the age of two, by 13%. The gene therapy itself treated mice with a DNA-modified virus, the viral genes replaced by those of a telomerase enzyme with a key role in aging. Like this: Like Loading... The incident happened about 11:13 p.m. on the platform of the Clark and Division Red Line stop, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. A man dressed all in black and armed with a handgun hit a 27-year-old man several times with the gun and grabbed his iPhone 4S, Mirabelli said. At that point the robber’s accomplice, another man dressed all in black, pulled out a knife and began stabbing the Guardian Angels. Area Central detectives are investigating. Watching the 'birth' of an electron: Ionization viewed with 10 attosecond resolution.

A strong laser beam can remove an electron from an atom -- a process which takes place almost instantly. At the Vienna University of Technology, this phenomenon could now be studied with a time resolution of less than ten attoseconds (ten billionths of a billionth of a second). Scientists succeeded in watching an atom being ionized and a free electron being "born. " These measurements yield valuable information about the electrons in the atom, which up until now hasn't been experimentally accessible, such as the time evolution of the electron's quantum phase -- the beat to which the quantum waves oscillate. Wave-like Quantum Interference In the experiment, short laser pulses are fired at atoms. Each laser pulse can be described as a light wave -- the wave sweeps over the atom, and therefore, the electric field around the atom changes. The electric field rips an electron away from the atom -- but the precise moment at which this happens cannot be defined. It's All About the Phase.

Earlier this year I tweeted that HTML5 gamedevs are the new generation of game makers, and like every other 'new generation' we reinvent the same patterns or techniques our older friends implemented 30 years ago.

During two days of the conference it will be also possible to listen to presentations of the biggest, most talented and most respected HTML5 game developers from all over the world. History[edit] The areas later known as Sudetenland never formed a single historical region, which makes it difficult to distinguish the history of the Sudetenland apart from that of Bohemia, until the advent of nationalism in the 19th century. The Chicago Police Department is ready: Not only has the city passed strict new protest ordinances, but it’s been stockpiling serious riot gear in anticipation of conflict with the protesters. According to a report from the Guardian’s Adam Gabbatt, in recent months the Chicago police have spent over $1 million on riot equipment, and are preparing to use a controversial LRAD (long-range acoustic device) — a sound cannon designed to cause extreme pain to those in its path. The Chicago Police Department is pitching the LRAD largely as a means to communicate with large crowds: “This is simply a risk management tool, as the public will receive clear information regarding public safety messages and any orders provided by police,” Chicago Police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton told the Guardian. Some movie and TV mysteries, however, weren't intended to be mysteries at all, and often are just the result of the director getting cute at the last minute. Tempietto Longobardo, Cividale del Friuli The Lombards or Langobards (Latin: Langobardī, Italian Longobardi), were a Germanic tribe who ruled Italy from 568 to 774. The Lombard historian Paul the Deacon wrote in the Historia Langobardorum that the Lombards descended from a small tribe called the Winnili [1] who dwelt in southern Scandinavia[2] (Scadanan) before migrating to seek new lands.

In the 1st century AD they formed part of the Suebi, in northwestern Germany. By the end of the 5th century they had moved into the area roughly coinciding with modern Austria north of the Danube river, where they subdued the Heruls and later fought frequent wars with the Gepids. The Lombard king Audoin defeated the Gepid leader Thurisind in 551 or 552; his successor Alboin eventually destroyed the Gepids at the Battle of Asfeld in 567.

With Mobile World Congress behind us and the HTC One series of devices stealing the show, many HTC customers were left drooling over the new version of Sense and Android 4.0 that came along with it. Well, if you’re currently still holding onto your aging HTC Thunderbolt, we may have some good news that will breathe new life into the device. It appears that HTC has begun the testing phase for getting Ice Cream Sandwich onto the device, sending out emails looking for testers of the software as leaked by VZBuzz. Keeping true to their word, HTC has not forgotten the Thunderbolt and even though the device might not have the latest dual-core specs, it’s nice to see the device hasn’t been abandoned by it’s parent.

It’s still unclear if the Thunderbolt will be receiving the all new Sense 4.0 as found on the HTC One X and One S — or the slightly toned down Sense 3.6 as found on the HTC One V. We’re guessing the latter. Verizon Android update schedule leaked. A Reddit user by the name of DroidTosser claims to have the inside scoop on Verizon’s Android update schedule, and has posted the images to back their story up. According the photos, the HTC Rezound is slated receive an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on May 9th, followed by the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX on May 21st.

Verizon’s first Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola XOOM is currently awaiting “technical approval” and will be updated directly by Google. The DROID Bionic, HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Sony Xperia Play are all in testing, however the updates aren’t labeled as Ice Cream Sandwich builds and may just refer to bug fixes. When Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave a gloved Black Power salute on the Olympic podium in October 1968 it sent a shockwave through sport. But what happened to the other man on the platform? Forty years ago, two black Americans, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, won gold and bronze medals in the 200m final at the Mexico Olympics, and used their time on the victory podium to protest with a Black Power salute. The photograph of the two men with their heads bowed, each of them with an arm raised in the air and a fist clothed in a black leather glove, is one of the most striking images of the 20th Century. Their actions caused havoc at the Games, ensuring the pair were ejected from the US Olympic team. But three men won medals in that race, and the consequences for the third athlete on the podium would be every bit as significant.
