Government officials knew that major preparations needed to be arranged in the Ukraine in order to accomodate the thousands of people that attend the tournanment every year, but citizens were not aware that part of the preparation would include slaughtering stray animals. For years, animal activists in Ukraine have been protesting against the inhumane practices used to solve the stray animal problem. But their pleas have virtually gone unheard. And with the football tournamnent rapidly appraching, things have taken a turn for the worse. Stray dogs and cats were previously killed using an illegal poison called ditiline. Ukraine has made the strays a problem of urgency because of the tournament. Animal Activists in Ukraine are furious that nothing is being done about these mass animal killings.
You can help them by signing this petition calling on Ukraine to stop burning animals alive.
Lettre d'un chien à son Maitre (How Could You) Escaped Pet Birds Are Teaching Wild Birds to Speak English. Written by Stephen Messenger, a Treehugger blogger Across parts of Australia, reports have been pouring in of strange voices chattering high in the treetops — mysterious, nonsensical conversations in English.
But while this phenomenon is certainly quite odd, its explanation isn’t paranormal. It turns out that escaped pet birds, namely parrots and cockatoos, have begun teaching their wild bird counterparts a bit of the language they picked up from their time in captivity — and, according to witnesses, that includes more than a few expletives. Jaynia Sladek, an ornithologist from the Australian Museum, says that some birds are just natural mimickers, able to acquire new sounds based on things they hear around them. For birds kept as pets, these sounds tend to mirror human language — but that influence doesn’t cease even after said birds escape or are released back into the wild. This post was originally published by Treehugger. Man Hunt for Escaped Puppy Mill Dog: She's Alive! From the second Abby bolted through the kitchen door with her leash dragging behind her in the middle of a thunderstorm, the Shaddock family was in a state of panic.
How would they ever find the dog they had just saved after eight years on a puppy farm? Would she recognize their voices as they called to her? How would anyone ever get near this petrified dog even if they could find her? Neighbors, co-workers, police and dog lovers from miles around re-defined the term ‘man hunt’ when they came together, as men and women, in an unrelenting effort to bring Abby home safe. 500 Dogs Seized From Quebec Puppy Mill. 527 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill outside Quebec in what appears to be the largest animal cruelty case in the province’s history.
Quebec is known as the puppy mill capital of North America. Dogs from 30 different breeds that ranged in age from puppies to adults were found Friday at a large-scale commercial breeding facility in a rural part of Montreal. They were reported to be living in unsanitary conditions without sufficient food and water. Many of the dogs suffered from skin and respiratory problems. A routine inspection of the facility during the day on Friday led officials from the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food back to the puppy mill that evening to seize the animals.
It took until late Saturday night for workers to transport all of the dogs to an emergency shelter set up outside Montreal. Guy Auclair, a spokesperson for the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said the scale of the seizure is “without precedent in Quebec.” Exposing the Impact of Our Choices on Nonhuman Animals.
In 1985, I was fascinated by what I’d read about Sarah, a chimpanzee who could use a symbolic language to communicate, so I contacted Dr.
David Premack, the principal researcher working with Sarah and other chimps at the University of Pennsylvania primate research lab, to volunteer. I’ll never forget meeting Sarah. When I was brought to her cage, I was warned to stay away from the bars because Sarah was strong enough, and often aggressive enough, to grab me and cause severe injury. Sarah lived alone in her cage. The dairy industry enjoys a carefully crafted public image that leaves many consumers with visions of happy animals and green rolling hills.
In reality this tenuous image masks a history of animal abuse, which continues unabated due to a lack of public awareness. Many milk drinkers are shocked to learn that dairy cows are kept almost continually pregnant in order to maximise their production of milk — milk that nature intended for their baby calves. Once born, bewildered calves are separated from their grieving mothers and routinely killed as 'waste products' before they are even a week old.
Already born to a terrible fate, the dairy industry recently lobbied government to prevent reforms, and it remains legally permissible to withhold liquid food from these unwanted calves for the last 30 hours of their lives as they are trucked and prepared for slaughter. The dairy industry has long operated under a veil of secrecy. Société Anti-Fourrure. Chiens à adopter à la S.P.A. de Péruwelz. Justice pour les chats martyrisés de l'Aisne. In Ohio County, Indiana, an incredibly cruel event called Snapperfest has been held for the past 13 years. Wild snapping turtles are yanked by the tail and swung around until contestants can grab hold of their necks and twist it around a person’s arm. Activists nearly stopped the event in 2011, and with your support this torturous “festival” will never be held again. Snapperfest is held at the end of August at the Campshore Campground in Indiana. It has grown in popularity over the years. It is touted as a wrangling event for wild snapping turtles and participants like Chris Probst call it, “…good, clean fun and anybody from the crowd can participate.”
Snapperfest gets its family friendly reputation because contestants do not try to kill the turtles, but PETA strongly disagrees. “Wild-caught snapping turtles endure terrible violence at the hands of participants. Probst accused PETA of being misleading and told a local radio station, “We do not kill the turtles. Related Stories: Missing Colorado Cat Found In NYC After 5 Years. After five years, a calico cat name Willow will be reunited with her Boulder, Colorado, family, the Squires. In late 2006 or early 2007, Willow disappeared from their home when contractors left a door open.
Quite to their shock, the Squires received a call on Wednesday saying that Willow was in ….. Manhattan. A man had found Willow on East 20th street and brought her to an animal shelter, where workers at Animal Care and Control identified Willow thanks to a microchip the Squires implanted in her as a kitten. A photo of Willow confirmed to the Squires that she was indeed the cat who had gone missing some five years ago, says the New York Times. The question remains, how in the world did Willow get from Boulder to the streets of New York City? Willow, Gothamist reported Friday morning, was befriended and adopted by a New Yorker on a Colorado ski vacation and was flown across the country to a new home in Brooklyn.
Hurricane Pet Rescues (Videos) Editor’s note: During natural disasters, many pet owners are forced to evacuate their homes and leave their animals behind. This was unfortunately the case during the recent hurricane that swept through the East Coast. Luckily, the Humane Society was able to rescue many animals that were stranded by the storm.
