Power Stage Controllers drive transistors in applications like DC to DC converters, power factor correcting circuits, motor drivers, etc. Atmel describes the basics of their PSC equipped AVRs: This application note is an introduction to the use of the Power Stage Controllers (PSC) available in some AVR microcontrollers. The object of this document is to give a general overview of the PSC, show their various modes of operation and explain how to configure them. The code examples will make this clearer and can be used as guide for other applications.
The Illuminato is an AVR based chip, much like the Arduino, and is 100% Open Source - GNU GPL, that is. It has 42 I/O pins, more than any other Arduino clone out there right now, and even works with all the shields built for the Arduino. It has a 16 MHz oscillating crystal (the same as the Arduino), but 64K code space (twice the space) since I tend to run out room when building larger projects. http://oshwbank.org/

Milkymist SoC , featuring the LatticeMico32 microprocessor core, has a complete set of independently developed open source system-on-chip cores such as a SDRAM controller, bus components, graphics accelerators and a variety of I/O devices. [ 1 ] MyCPU is a "central processing unit" that is completely build with discrete logic gates. OpenCores is a loose community of designers that supports open-source cores (logic designs) for CPUs, peripherals and other devices. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_hardware_projects
