Jacob Holdt American Pictures - Site web de l'artiste. "American Pictures" - a tool against racism Racism in America, in Europe or universally: American Pictures is an audio-visual anti-racism program which in an effective, entertaining and moving way shows the ultimate cost of racial discrimination, segregation and ghettoization of ethnic minorities.

Jacob Holdt's pictures of poverty, oppression, slavery and injustice in the black underclass are used widely for racial prejudice reduction and multicultural diversity training in universities, colleges and high schools, but are also excellent for sociology conventions and human rights seminars. Jacob Holdt's photography of despairing poor black ghettos and mind crippling child poverty as the end result of white supremacy and institutionalized inequality and injustice - not to speak of his shocking portrayal of extremist white hate groups, Ku Klux Klan and neo Nazis and even mass murderers - seems to belong in a distant history, but is made long after the civil rights struggle.

An Interview with Jacob Holdt: "American Pictures" (1993) By Ronald Netsky In the early 1970s, while vagabonding around the United States, Jacob Holdt would write to his parents in Denmark about the unspeakable poverty he witnessed.

But his parents didn’t always believe what he wrote.”They sent me a little pocket camera for my birthday and asked me to send some pictures home,” said Holdt, “and that was the beginning of 15,000 pictures.” It was also the beginning of American Pictures, Holdt’s international best-seller, and a slide show of the same name dubbed a ”hippie masterpiece” by the Village Voice. Holdt, 44, sees America through the eyes of an outsider.

From his initial travels as a penniless vagabond two decades ago, to his campus lecture tours of today, he has used photography to drive home a powerful message. “I lived with my black friends all those years,” said Holdt. Holdt approached the United States as a citizen of the world who would not accept the limitations society usually imposes. “All of a sudden I stood there in a snow storm. Jacob Holdt - Dazed. In 1971 Danish student Jacob Holdt looked a bit like Jesus.

Jacob Holdt - Dazed

A young man with long brown hair and a beard and flared jeans travelling across the United States. He never considered himself an artist but during his travels he created one of the most important and emotive photographic archives of modern America. Holdt was born in 1947 in Copenhagen and raised in a small village in western Jutland, where his pastor father worked. He wasn’t a model student. “I got thrown out of high school in my second year so I couldn’t go to university,” he recalls. I just loved travelling in America. The results were out-of-this-world intimate. The situations Holdt got himself into were definitely intense.

Holdt hitchhiked 118,000 miles and stayed in over 400 homes in 48 states. He worked in cotton and tobacco fields watching the systems of exploitation and oppression.
