Data from the ACS influences how more than $675 billion in federal and state funds are spent each year. For the ACS to be a rich, valuable source of information for local communities, it must occasionally be revised to reflect our changing nation. A revised question can be clearer, easier to understand, and yield a higher response rate; revisions may also remove outdated and irrelevant phrasing in questions and instructions. For those who study trends, changes to survey questions—like the changes to the measurement of disability in the 2008 ACS—pose challenges if the revised questions result in estimates no longer being comparable across years. Son múltiples los factores que hacen que se incremente el riesgo de una crisis de alimentos, entre ellos podemos señalar: reducción de los terrenos aptos para el cultivo, que la producción de alimentos que se cultivan en Puerto Rico no satisface la demanda local, el 85% de los productos que consumimos son importados y el área para el manejo de estas importaciones en un solo puerto es muy riesgoso.
Además el establecimiento de políticas que en lugar de promover la agricultura como sector económico, lo hacen más débil. Por mucho tiempo grupos ambientalistas y comunitarios y profesionales que se destacan en la industria de alimentos han estado señalando este problema, pero no han logrado que sus reclamos se transformen en políticas encaminadas a lograr un sistema alimentario que sea sostenible.
