Google Classroom’s basic features are powerful. Take it to the next level with some add-ons created just for teachers and students.

The basic functions of Google Drive and Google Classroom are only the starting point for the innovative and creative uses one can use in the classroom. Alice Keeler, my co-author in our upcoming book Ditch That Homework, proves that again and again. Alice is one of the only people I know personally who codes for fun. (OK, she’s probably the only one I know like that!) She writes scripts for teachers to use with their Google tools. It’s like Google Sheets bows down on one knee to this woman and does her bidding.

Alice has created dozens of pre-created templates, add-ons, scripts, extensions — you name it, she’s created them. Two of these are Google Chrome extensions — little programs you install in your Chrome web browser that will perform certain tasks. But most are scripts/add-ons she wrote to run inside Google Sheets or other Google tools. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. PDF to JPG in Google Chrome™ Edición de vídeo en línea para escuelas y distritos K-12. Ideas for adapting group lessons to working on Zoom. As has happened in much of Europe, Poland has now closed schools, universities and other places where people might gather in the hope of reducing the spread of coronavirus. Our school had its last normal lessons on Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday dedicated to training our teachers how to use Zoom. We start teaching on Monday 16th, so my total experience with Zoom so far has been in the training process.

However, I wanted to share what we’ve done and some of the ideas we’ve had for our adapting our standard EFL face-to-face lessons, in the hope that others will be able to build on this. Useful links International House World arranged a live session run by Shaun Wilden on Tuesday 10th, in which he introduced us to Zoom. I’d also recommend Ceri Jones’s posts on the Cambridge University Press blog: Other useful posts: There’s a very active hashtag on Twitter called #coronavirusteaching, which you can view without having a Twitter account.

Mentimeter and word clouds. On Thursday 7th May I did a 60-minute Zoom training session on how to use Zoom…meta! I worked with about 20 teachers from Urban School and other language schools in Barcelona, showing them how to use Mentimeter and word clouds in their online lessons, and in the process answering questions on a few other aspects of using Zoom. Thanks to Urien Shaw for organising it.

Mentimeter We started by playing with Mentimeter, which is interactive presentation software. I used an open-ended question displaying a flowing grid so we could get to know each other a little: To answer a question, participants go to and type the code from your presentation. Here is a full list of all of the Mentimeter question types and how to make them. Here are some ways you can use Mentimeter in class: Multiple choice Which (form of this) activity do you want to do?

Google Docs add-ons work similarly to how a browser extension works. They are a third-party app that you install to Google Docs to gain additional features. Some add-ons increase productivity (like proofreading tools) and some add more extensive capabilities (like allowing teachers to integrate grades into students papers).

Here’s how to install them and some of our favorites. Installing an Add-On To get an add-on, open a new or existing file in Google Docs, click “Add-ons,” and then click “Get add-ons.” You can browse the list of all add-ons, use the drop-down menu to sort by category or search using the search bar. Upon installing add-ons, you need to grant them specific permissions.

Click “Allow.” After you’ve installed an add-on, click on “Add-ons”, point to the one you want to use, and then click either “Start” or “Show.” Removing an Add-On If you no longer need an add-on or one just didn’t perform as you expected, they’re easy to remove from Google Docs. Romantics Anonymous Emma Rice’s bittersweet musical confection, about love in a chocolate factory, marked her departure from Shakespeare’s Globe when it premiered at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in 2017. Now revived by her own company, Wise Children, it will be live-streamed from the beautiful Bristol Old Vic for what has been called a “digital tour”. Partner theatres from around the world will host the stream on different nights, from 22-26 September, with a special prologue for each region promising a bit of unique “local flavour”.

The personal stuff Last week would have been Terry Pratchett‘s birthday, hence the quote above.

It was also the 30th anniversary of Good Omens, written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. To mark the occasion, and to provide a little light relief, Gaiman and team have put together this conversation between Crowley and Aziraphale: I’ve been really enjoying all of the culture that we’re now able to access from our homes. That’s why I donated to Acting for Others this week – I’m lucky enough to still have money coming in, but many performers are out of work for who knows how long. The other change that I’ve really enjoyed in the past few weeks is the number of international group conversations I take part in every week, both with old friends and making new ones. As I wrote in my last post, I’ve decided to use trending songs to create tasks for my classes. The reason is the obvious link between music and motivation; especially when we’re talking about teenagers. Since the lockdown began, most of them tend to be easily distracted and they just have that look that says: I’m not interested in the coursebook. At all. I used to create song worksheets for my face-to-face classes, too. The problem is that in an online setting, designing and sharing such materials is a bit tricky. You don’t just give students a photocopy and play a song.

It takes more time and effort. The song I’ve chosen this week is What if I told you that I love you by Ali Gatie. Click here to open the folder Level Suitable for intermediate classes. "Digital citizenship" is an umbrella term that covers a whole host of important issues. Broadly, it's the guidelines for responsible, appropriate behavior when one is using technology.

But specifically, it can cover anything from "netiquette" to cyberbullying; technology access and the digital divide; online safety and privacy; copyright, plagiarism, and digital law, and more. In fact, some programs that teach digital citizenship have outlined no less than nine elements that intersect to inform a well-equipped digital citizen. It's an overwhelming array of skills to be taught and topics to explore. But while there is much talk about the importance of teaching digital citizenship in this information society, not many are sure what that really looks like.
