The study, funded by the Medical Research Council and to be published online in Nature Genetics, not only demonstrates a mechanism which is likely to be widely relevant in vertebrate development, but also provides confidence that chemicals called morphogens, which control these patterns, can be used in regenerative medicine to differentiate stem cells into tissue. The findings provide evidence to support a theory first suggested in the 1950s by famous code-breaker and mathematician Alan Turing, whose centenary falls this year. He fell in love with one of his students, Mabel, a young woman of 17 years, who had lost her hearing in childhood through contracting scarlet fever. To help Mabel and some of the younger children at his Boston school avoid collisions with horse- drawn carriages approaching from behind, he conceived a simple idea: If they walked outside holding a balloon they would feel the sounds made by the carriages through their fingertips.
Alexander realized that the balloon's surface would tremble in sympathy with the sound of the approaching carriages and alert the children to their presence. A few weeks ago, I did some research about cymatics, and began thinking about how I would perform an experiment to observe the phenomenon myself. Process: I obtained a 15″ Speaker I tested my speaker and amp setup using small plastic tray lids and water, to see how the fluid would respond. I also made three modifications to see which lid would reflect the light the way I wanted. I found that the clear tray did not isolate the reflective peaks, and the tray sprayed on the outside created too much sheen to see the peaks clearly. This was a successful study, but I needed a larger tray for more interesting patterns. I also needed to contain the water in a uniformly distributed ring, as I found the tray ridges along the outer edge were interfering with the natural wave formations.
