A slide show by Rick Walker Why bother with Tissue Culture (TC)? Faster propagation (perhaps 10x) - reduces demand for wild collected plants. No worry about fungus, pests, etc. Long term maintainance of plants (stick 'em in the fridge!) (actually, the last point is not quite true. Some useful definitions Totipotency: certain cells have the capacity, when isolated and properly grown, to regenerate a whole plant. Meristem: The region in a growing plant where the cells are rapidly dividing.

Both these pictures are reproduced from "Plants from Test Tubes" by Lydian Kyte. More accurately, this should be called a talk on "in-vitro" propagation of carnivorous plants. It is very difficult (or sometimes nearly impossible as in Nepenthes) to properly sterilize meristem tissue from many CP. For this reason, the most reliable way to start a CP cell line is from seeds. Almost from the time man first began domesticating farm animals, barnyard manure — the livestock's excretions mixed with bedding material — was used as a fertilizer to increase the yield of his crops. Agriculturalists used to believe that plants literally "ate" the soil. From Liebig's new theory there were several corollaries to be drawn, and the nineteenth-century assault on traditional agriculture was soon in full sway. Unfortunately, as with all radical theories that presume to save the world by sweeping away the entirety of man's past endeavors, chemical fertilization and its adjunct, insecticides, did not turn out to be the panacea expected.
