How a Professional Cinematographer Breaks Down a Script. Great cinematographers don't just show up on set, capture some images, and call it good.
They work tirelessly and meticulously though the pre-production process in order to ensure that once they arrive on set, most of the work has already been done. While these processes are numerous and range from location scouting to building gear lists, one of the very first, and most critical, is breaking down the script. I've talked about script breakdowns for cinematographers in the past and outlined my own process.
However, in an excellent little excerpt from his recent CreativeLive course about cinematography preparation, Jim Denault ASC shared his process for breaking down a script, and it's quite different from mine. This clip includes what he looks for both from an aesthetic point of view (i.e., sketching out how he wants these scenes to look and feel) as well as how to find technical and practical challenges that he and his team need to overcome. 13 Great Movies That Will Make You Completely Depressed. In the last few years we have seen the number of complains about the lack of good female roles increase.
Audiences are not satisfied with the archetypes, that once were considered the norm, for portraying women in cinema and are looking for movies in which the woman isn’t exclusively an accessory. Recently there has been a big change in that sense. Female lead movies are creating more buzz and topping the box office. Take a look at The Hunger Games, one of the most successful franchises of all times, Gone Girl, an unexpected hit that would cause a very different reaction if it was released ten years ago, and this year’s Mad Max that focused more on the fierce female lead than on the titular character.
Nevertheless, complex female characters have always existed, you just needed to look closer. The 25 Greatest Palme d’Or Winners In Cannes History. The 68th installment of what’s probably still the world’s best known, most prestigious film festival is coming up fast, and yet there’s still little known about the festival, beyond that the fact that Joel and Ethan Coen will be taking time out of post-production on the upcoming “Hail Caesar” to head up the competition jury. Normally, we’d have learned at least what the opening film of the festival by this this time would be, but the line-up remains very much under wraps at the moment. The 25 Best Animated Films Of The 21st Century So Far. By The Playlist Staff | The Playlist March 19, 2015 at 1:50PM Surprisingly, of all the many, many names we were called over our ranking of The 50 Best Films Of The Decade So Far, "anti-animation, hegemonic live-action crypto-fascists" wasn't one, despite the fact we didn't feature any animated movies on that list.
We were a touch disappointed, to be honest, as we had a snappy comeback at the ready: we were already in the planning stages of an all-animation feature, so we felt justified in separating the live action picks from their hand-drawn, computer generated, stop motion and claymation brethren. So here is that list: the time frame is extended this time to include any animated film in any style (bar rotoscoping, which we excluded because of its reliance on live-action filming first) from 2000 till now.
