Georgi Kobilarov » Startups: Europe vs. Silicon Valley. In the past couple of months I’ve been running around a bit here in Europe telling people what I do at my startup Uberblic, for all kinds of reasons. These conversations with people in Europe (esp. here in Germany) usually go like this: other : “so what is Uberblic?” Me : “Uberblic is a data platform, we pull in data from Web APIs, link the entities across the data silos and provide one integrated API on top.” other : “hm, why?” Me : “well, there are so many data silos on the Web, each with data about one aspect of interest, but things are much more powerful when being put into context and integrated with other information. Developers often need to access data from multiple silos. But integrating that data is hard for them.

Other : “hm, that sounds quite abstract. Today I had this conversation once again, but this time with someone who works at one of the big Web companies in Silicon Valley: other : “what is Uberblic?” Other : “so you connect the object graph across APIs?” Me : “yes, exactly” The Semantic Web & THE POWER OF PULL » Blog. And yet today’s phones basically mimic our desktop computers. Do you really want to open a Word or Excel document on your phone? Come to think of it, why should everything be stored on your phone?

Why download any apps at all? The answer to today’s scalability problems is the personal data locker. Thank you. Note that we're not necessarily talking about the Semantic Web, which is the Tim Berners-Lee W3C led initiative that touts technologies like RDF, OWL and other standards for metadata. Semantic Apps may use those technologies, but not necessarily. This was a point made by the founder of one of the Semantic Apps listed below, Danny Hillis of Freebase (who is as much a tech legend as Berners-Lee). The purpose of this post is to highlight 10 Semantic Apps. We're not touting this as a 'Top 10', because there is no way to rank these apps at this point - many are still non-public apps, e.g. in private beta.

It reflects the nascent status of this sector, even though people like Hillis and Spivack have been working on their apps for years now. What is a Semantic App? Firstly let's define "Semantic App". Semantic Web entrepreneurs are discovering that adaptability matters to their own business models as well, when the field is still so green, many people still aren’t 100 percent sure about why the Semantic Web might matter to them, and potential big customers may be skeptical about the street cred of an emerging company in a space that may still feel a little blurry to them.
