IGF announces shortlist for Best Student Game | Free Games, News. The 15th Independant Games Festival award shortlist already contains plenty of weird and wonderful indies. Now the IGF's organisers have announced their contenders for the best student game of last year. It's a strong list of quirky, experimental and mostly free games that are well worth trying. More importantly, a quick search shows that we haven't covered the excellent Zineth before.

This just won't do! Here's the list: ATUM (NHTV IGAD)Back to Bed (Danish Academy of Digital Interactive Entertainment) Blackwell's Asylum (Danish Academy of Digital Interactive Entertainment) Farsh (NHTV IGAD) Knights of Pen & Paper (IESB - Instituto de Ensino Superior de Brasilia & UnB - Universidade de Brasilia) the mindfulxp volume (Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center) Pulse (Vancouver Film School) Zineth (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) I'm ashamed to admit that I've only played a few of these. Finally, Zineth! LuminAR bulb lights path to augmented reality (w/ video) (Phys.org)—Are we moving closer to a computer age where "touchscreen" is in the room, but it is the counter, desktop, wall, our new digital work areas? Are we moving into a new form factor called Anywhere? Do we understand how locked up we are in on-screen prisons, and that options will come?

The drive for options is strong at the MIT Media Lab, where its Fluid Interfaces Group has been working on some AR options, the "Augmented Product Counter" and the "LuminAR. " The latter is a bulb that makes any surface a touchscreen. You can even use it to replace the bulb in a desk lamp with the MIT group's "bulb" to project images onto a surface. The LuminAR bulb is small enough to fit a standard light fixture. The LuminAR team, Natan Linder, Pattie Maes and Rony Kubat, described what they have done as redefining the traditional incandescent bulb and desk lamp as a new category of "robotic, digital information devices.

" The LuminAR bulb can be a standalone unit. DeRev. Oculus Rift: Step Into the Game by Oculus. FORM 1: An affordable, professional 3D printer by Formlabs. Are you frustrated that low-end 3D printers don’t have the quality to make the true beauty of your designs real? Do you dream of having the power and resolution of a truly professional machine on your desktop? We’ve created an easy-to-use system that rivals the output of high-end printers at a fraction of the cost.

Our reason for starting this project is simple: there are no low-cost 3D printers that meet the quality standards of the professional designer. As researchers at the MIT Media Lab, we were lucky to experience the best and most expensive fabrication equipment in the world. We’ve been hard at work for over a year, and with your help, we’re ready to take the Form 1 into full-fledged production. We’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to design a complete 3D printing experience: Read on for more details on what you’ll help bring into the world (and onto your desktop) if you support this effort. For most designers, the extruded plastic (i.e. Great hardware is only half the battle. The Next Web - International technology news, business & culture. (Phys.org)—Computers are good at speed, numbers, and massive amounts of data, but understanding the content of a simple drawing is more difficult.

Researchers at Brown and the Technical University of Berlin have produced a computer application that can identify simple abstract sketches of objects almost as often (56 percent of the time) as human viewers (73 percent). First they took over chess. Then Jeopardy. Soon, computers could make the ideal partner in a game of Draw Something (or its forebear, Pictionary). Researchers from Brown University and the Technical University of Berlin have developed a computer program that can recognize sketches as they're drawn in real time.

It's the first computer application that enables "semantic understanding" of abstract sketches, the researchers say. The research behind the program was presented last month at SIGGRAPH, the world's premier computer graphics conference. They ended up with a set of 250 object categories. Ubi is short for ubiquitous computer because it's always on, always listening, always ready to help. Ubi listens to its environment and senses it through sound, temperature, light, pressure, and humidity. Ubi can be used for potentially hundreds of applications. We see a huge potential for Ubi to assist those who have visual, hearing, or mobility impairments.

So for the past two years I’ve been multi-classing with game dev studio Big Robot, and we’ve been doing some stuff, which we’ve talked about before on RPS. The thing we’re most excited about, though, is what we’re working on right now, which is called Sir, You Are Being Hunted.

It is a procedurally-generated first-person, open world game, with some sneaking, some shooting, some tweedpunk adversaries, and plenty of fleeing in terror. We’re now making excellent progress towards something playable, and have a few images to show for it. More on this below. Right now we’re working on two fronts. The villages also look pretty good: Remember that none of this stuff is hand-placed. Someone commented a while back that it was “disingenuous” of me to say that the game is “lo-fi”, because it looks good. An artificial gentleman catches up with me: A hunter engages another hunter patrol: And what would the guard robots be guarding? Oh, mystery! Gaikai ported to Chrome Native Client, which is a bigger deal than it sounds. Gaikai, the streaming game service, can let you play games in a browser window. That's impressive, but it's nothing new. Gaikai's service typically uses Java, which means you'll have to install Java, update it, and possibly even grant it permissions before you play a demo of a game.

Each one of those clicks and every second you wait is another opportunity for you to decide you'd rather not play anything. But at Google I/O 2012 this week, Gaikai demonstrated a version of the service that doesn't require any download or installation at all. Gaikai CEO David Perry told us last month that he was looking for a way to eliminate Java from the equation (among many, many other things), and when we spoke to him today, he said that Gaikai can run at 60 frames per second using NaCL, with no limitations that the company's aware of.
