Drunken pranks range from psychological torture of the new students - such as not being allowed to sleep at night - to being forced to eat dog food, sexual harassment, being urinated upon or made to bathe naked in animal blood. "Bizutage (the primitive student ceremonies) is a rite of passage from one stage of life to another", explains French ethnologist Brigitte Largueze.
