The Vatican Role in the Ustasha Genocide in the Independent State of Croatia

Source: US Holocaust Memorial Museum. By Carl Savich What role, if any, did the Vatican play in the genocide committed in the Independent State of Croatia, a Roman Catholic state sponsored by the Vatican? This has been a controversial topic regarding World War II historiography. Renewed debate was stirred in 1999 with the publication of Hitler’s Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII (New York: Viking, 1999) by John Cornwell.

Vatican Knowledge The nature of the Ustasha NDH regime was well-known by the Vatican and by the US government as early as 1941. Pope Pius XII defended Ante Pavelic as “a much maligned man” and sent Papal Nuncio Giuseppe Ramiro Marcone (1882-1952) to the NDH regime during World War II as his personal representative. Cardinal William Levada, then archbishop of San Francisco, said in a 2005 deposition obtained by The Associated Press that he did nothing and didn't contact police because he trusted the Rev. Milton Walsh would not re-offend and his predecessor handled the case adequately. There were no known allegations of later abuse by the priest and a Vatican attorney says Levada acted appropriately under standards of the time.

When Levada learned of the abuse, Walsh had been pastor for six years at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, a parish of about 1,000 people. Levada is now the highest-ranking American at the Vatican and head of the office that defrocks pedophile priests. Russia’s Threat to Nuke the “Near Abroad” is met with Silence « Letter from Estonia

Russia’s Threat to Nuke the “Near Abroad” is met with Silence One gets the sensation that something is really out of kilter with the world that we live in. On Thursday, Gen. Nikolai Makarov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, cautioned over NATO’s expansion eastward, and warned that the risks for Russia to be pulled into local conflicts have “risen sharply.” Mr. Anyone who has studied Kremlinology and Russian history knows by heart the hypothesis about the Russians being terrified – to the point of not being able to sleep – of encirclement, which, if taken to its logical conclusion, would apparently give them some sort of unexplained right to expand their borders and keep expanding their borders because of this paranoia.

For as long as I can remember, a large number of Western Russia-watchers have parroted in chorus: “poor things, they are deathly afraid of being encircled, we must try to understand them.” Like this: Like Loading... Home. Sisyphus as Social Democrat. If there were justice in the world, John Kenneth Galbraith would rank as the twentieth century's most influential American economist.

Sisyphus as Social Democrat

He has published several books that are among the best analyses of modern U.S. history, played a key role in midcentury policymaking, and advised more presidents and senators than would seem possible in three lifetimes. Yet today, Galbraith's influence on economics is small, and his influence on U.S. politics is receding by the year. In this lively and thoughtful biography, Richard Parker sets himself the task of explaining Galbraith's career: why it was so dazzling, and why its long-term impact has turned out to be so much less than expected. The result is not only the story of a smart, witty, and important man, but also a fascinating meditation on the rise and fall of twentieth-century American liberalism. That Galbraith's career has been dazzling nobody can dispute. To continue reading, please log in. Don't have an account? Register Have an account? Actualité à la Une.
