The African art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art contains about 250 works. The collection's focus is on masks and figures from West and Central Africa, mostly carved in wood. The collection also contains works made from a variety of other materials, including ivory, copper alloys, gold, fibers, beads, animal skins, and earthenware. While most of these objects were made in the late 19th or early 20th century, two fragmentary terracotta figures, one from Nigeria, the other from Mali, date back to 500 BC and AD 1000, respectively, thus shedding light on the continent's ancient cultural history.

The collection's strengths include a group of metal and ivory objects from the ancient Kingdom of Benin in contemporary Nigeria (1500–1897) and a number of masks and figures in various media from different peoples in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired its first African works of art in 1915, a year before its doors opened to the public. Africa: arts and cultures. Humans first evolved in Africa, walking upright about five million years ago, and making the first tools about two and a half million years ago using the opposable thumb.

The British Museum collection includes objects dating from this time, but also represents historic and contemporary societies across the continent. Long before contact with Europe, several African states, including ancient Egypt, Aksum, ancient Ghana, Mali, Songhoy, Ile Ife, and the Benin kingdom, became well known in different parts of the continent. Brass works from Ile Ife and from Benin are among the most famous objects in the Museum collection.

Other states, such as the Asante Confederation, the Bakuba and Buganda developed later. The centralised government systems of these kingdoms were based on the exclusive authority of the ruler, or king, whose power was often justified through religious ideology. Contemporary art, both for the art market and for the indigenous market, thrives. - Page d'accueil. How this is done has evolved throughout the museum’s history. The collections will be preferably developed further as part of scientific projects in Africa, in which the involvement of local partners is of crucial importance.
