MbM – Management by Magic. Big Data in Complex Systems: Challenges and Opportunities. English | ISBN: 3319110551 | 2015 | 508 Pages | PDF | 17 MB This volume provides challenges and Opportunities with updated, in-depth material on the application of Big data to complex systems in order to find solutions for the challenges and problems facing big data sets applications. Much data today is not natively in structured format; for example, tweets and blogs are weakly structured pieces of text, while images and video are structured for storage and display, but not for semantic content and search. Therefore transforming such content into a structured format for later analysis is a major challenge. Data analysis, organization, retrieval, and modeling are other foundational challenges treated in this book.

UME Graduate School » Tribute to Prof. Nigel Priestley – by Rebecca Priestley. Rebecca Priestley, columnist of the New Zealand Listener, the country’s only national, weekly current affairs and entertainment magazine, pays tribute to the work of her father, Professor Nigel Priestley.

The moving article is reproduced below. A tribute to my father, Nigel Priestley (1943-2014) By Dr Rebecca Priestley, Victoria University of Wellington First published in The Listener, issue 3898, 22 January 2015 One day, shortly before I started school, my father took me to his work at the Ministry of Works’ central laboratories, where he was head of structures. When his colleagues asked the inevitable, “How old are you?” It got a laugh from his colleagues, but I’m sure they appreciated the accuracy of my reply.

My father, Nigel Priestley, was a structural engineer who worked at universities in New Zealand, the US and Italy and whose consulting work took him to earthquake-prone countries around the world. He died just before Christmas. Nigel Priestley. Home - Jeff Bloom - Education, Research, & Services. Umberto Santucci - Se hai qualche problema ti aiuto a risolverlo. Our support systems such as food, water, energy and nature are increasingly tightly coupled, propelled by a population increasing in numbers, inequality and in wealth. Add to this the unbalances from climate change and it is clear that increased turbulence is here to stay. As a consequence, we need to balance our drive for ever increasing efficiency, with enhancing resilience to turbulence. Resilience is a simple, yet far reaching concept: a complex system is resilient if it can absorb a disturbance, while at the same time learning and adapting to become better system. Like a grain of sand in an oyster, the disturbances not only challenge the system, but they are at the same time its education. What are the products, services, strategies that build resilience and what are the associated new forms of collaboration?

The work grounds on the deeping of a case study: the Municipality of Siano, in the Campania Region (Italy), located in a valley area often subjected to hydro-geological events.

More specifically the examined area is periodically affected by significant hydro-geological events that trigger rapidly evolving destructive phenomena (mud flows). Tim Prior's research has focused on risk and decision making under uncertainty, particularly in relation to individual, community and organizational preparation and response to environmental risk.

"This contribution deals with contradictions between recovery planning and urban masterplanning in the case of the urban mega-disaster in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. While recovery planning is intended to enable a 'return to normal', urban master land use planning is aimed at an alteration or transformation of a given situation. In the case of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 the Citywide Recovery Plan had to adapt to the aftermath of disaster, while the 2030 Masterplan advocates growth and improvement. Which contradictions emerge, an what role do existing conditions as well as the scale of disaster play for this process? Here, the conjunction of particular spatial, institutional and social aspects of the city and the disaster seems critical. An interdisciplinary approach serves to integrate the existing discourses on the city and disaster.

Hence recovery processes should go beyond the traditional notion of bouncing back and restoring normalcy, and should strive for a change or transformation, which will prepare the affected communities to face future hazards. This study particularly looks at the different approaches in water, sanitation, and hygiene in post-disaster recovery to promote disaster resilience and assesses their effectiveness. Using the case study approach, evidence is gathered from the recent floods in Assam, India in 2011. Terry Cannon | Institute of Development Studies - Academia.edu. Neil Dufty.
