Deleuze se encuentra avocado a una teoría del diagrama. La clase IV dio inicio a una tipificación de las formas que el diagrama toma cuando se desenvuelve sobre la pintura. Cuando se excede en la instauración del caos, tenemos el primer tipo de diagrama, el del expresionismo abstracto de Pollock. Cuando se reduce al mínimo, el código prima, como en la obra de Mondrian, y estamos ante el segundo tipo. Finalmente toca ocuparnos del tercer tipo, el “más altamente pictórico”. Pero empecemos describiendo dos importantes dicotomías. En primer lugar, la dicotomía diagrama-código. Por ejemplo, la pintura abstracta inventa códigos ópticos. ¿Qué significa esto Con “digital” Deleuze hace referencia al campo de los códigos lógicos, los símbolos[3]. Pero, nunca hemos de olvidarlo, el que uno prime sobre el otro en algunas pinturas no los hace excluyentes.
