Bitch Media

Throughout this series, I have tried very hard not to write about the gigantic elephant in the room: Dan Savage. He’s a controversial figure, particularly when it comes to his statements on bisexuality , and though I quoted him in my post about Bi the Way , I haven’t wanted to dwell on him. I find much of his commentary on bisexuality thoughtless and insensitive, but he insists he is not biphobic , and I choose to believe him. I may disagree with a lot of his ideas, but I like some of them, I respect his efforts to campaign against LGBT youth bullying and suicide, and I am not interested in making assumptions about what lies in his heart. But in discussing bisexuality and the media, mentioning Savage is unavoidable.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve celebrated National Poetry Month on the Ms. Blog with landmark poems from Joan Larkin, Pat Parker, Fran Winant and the anonymous authors of Because Mourning Sickness is a Staple in My Country. Now, we conclude the series with the poem “Sappho’s Reply,” from the number-one-selling book of lesbian poetry published by a feminist press in the 1970s: Rita Mae Brown’s debut collection The Hand That Cradles the Rock. New York University Press first published The Hand ...Read More http://msmagazine.com/blog/
I’m generally with Linda Hirshman on this one: Hilary Rosen was right that Ann Romney does not speak for women in the workforce . And the whole controversy is entirely manufactured. For those just tuning in, here’s what Hilary Rosen said on Anderson Cooper, in response to a question about women and the economy: A lot of reports accompanying the release of The Hunger Games (movie) have made reference to a “love triangle” between Katniss, Gale, and Peeta. And I get what they’re trying to do there: The top-grossing YA movies of late have involved at least some kind of three-sided romantic entanglement. But The Hunger Games isn’t a love triangle–not by the traditional definition, at least. http://www.feministe.us/blog/

http://www.ourbodiesourblog.org/ President Obama on Monday said he was “confident” the Supreme Court will uphold the Affordable Care Act , adding that overturning it would be an “unprecedented, extraordinary step.” I think it’s important — because I watched some of the commentary last week — to remind people that this is not an abstract argument. People’s lives are affected by the lack of availability of healthcare, the inaffordability of healthcare, their inability to get healthcare because of preexisting conditions. The law that’s already in place has already given 2.5 million young people healthcare that wouldn’t otherwise have it. There are tens of thousands of adults with preexisting conditions who have healthcare right now because of this law. Parents don’t have to worry about their children not being able to get healthcare because they can’t be prevented from getting healthcare as a consequence of a preexisting condition.

“Read This First” used to be the title of this page, and perhaps it still should be. There’s a reason that this blog has a dedicated information page as the front page instead of just the latest posts. If you don’t read this page, and then the recommended guide pages that follow, and afterwards have difficulty finding the FAQ that you seek, then you only have yourself to blame. You may be a newbie to feminist theory, or looking to refresh your memory on some basics, or looking for links to provide to other people. Your intent may be to challenge feminism or to advocate feminism.

William De Witt Snodgrass (1926-2009) was a Pulitzer-winning American poet. Known for his confessional style, this long poem is probably his best known, and was written in honor of his daughter, from whom he was often separated following his divorce from her mother. It’s long, but worth the read. When Suibhe would not return to fine garments and good food, to his houses and his people, Loingseachan told him, “Your father is dead.” “I’m sorry to hear it,” he said. “Your mother is dead,” said the lad. http://www.harpyness.com/

Once again, Feministing is partnering with the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Conference, From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building the Movement for Reproductive Freedom, which will be held next weekend, April 13th-15th at Hampshire College. We should really thank Republicans for making this conference even more relevant and urgent than it usually is. Last year, Lori and Jos attended the conference. http://feministing.com/

So, President Obama was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, and it was interesting. Video of the interview is available here . The President, appearing at UNC Chapel Hill, did really well selling his support for not increasing interest on student loans, and I thought when he said that he and First Lady Michelle Obama, who both funded their law school educations with student loans, only paid off those student loans eight years ago was a remarkable moment. Especially because it wasn't designed to be one. He is a politician running for reelection, so he talked about the importance of education and left out the yucky bits like how education is not really the great equalizer we all pretend it is, and how it sure as shit doesn't guarantee young graduates a job these days. http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/

Central casting has taken wallops from both sides over their various ethnic interpretations of characters from Suzanne Collins' YA dystopian trilogy as they're being converted to the big screen. Here we go again. More » You've probably noticed it already, but let's just say it out loud: Hollywood is a mess . Serious, serious problems. And, according to one insider, Hollywood's leading ladies have it really bad.
I've recently gone mostly vegetarian. But most of my cheater, easy-through-the-week meals involve meat, so I'm struggling a bit to motivate myself to cook delicious food on weeknights. This week I ended up eating toast every evening and buying lunch, and now my wallet is empty.
