Labels: ancient methods , mondkopf , somaticae posted by redhotcar at 11:26 AM 0 comments

Shot By Both Sides

Listen, See, Feel

"It came from Austin" seems like an applicable phrase to describe the Alan Howarth -esque sensibilities of Adam Jones, a dominant force in the current Austin scene, who happens to play in a number of groups, including SURVIVE , Troller , Thousand Foot Whale Claw and probably a few more I'm unaware of. The whole "It came from..." element may feel reminiscent of B-movie trailers and posters from VHS rental spots, and that wouldn't be far off from the reality, except grounding the music of Troller & SURVIVE in nostalgia would be dually wrong and negligent of the primitive futurism beholden in the tunes. Melancholic darkness rides high, as does a preternatural sense of melody, often degraded into the mix, yet fully aware in headspace. I once played my Mom some SURVIVE in the car over holiday and she thought it was scary, but also liked the synth movements, which is weird, as I just expected the music to fly high over her head without any thought as to what she was actually hearing.

Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good: Weird in a good way. Like go

April 23, 2012 I’ve been following Chicago’s Maps & Atlases casually for a number of years (they put on a hell of a live show), but even still, their lastest album Beware and Be Grateful snuck up and completely took me surprise. The band has always been very skilled in the technical arena, with their noodling math-rock guitar lines and energetic drum fills, but their songwriting has grown by leaps and bounds. First single, “Winter” is a great example, an exhilarating slice of guitar pop with sunny melodies and tight rhythms that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Phoenix song. Check it out below and grab the full album via Barsuk Records .
After announcing their highly-anticipated return from hiatus and signing with Frenchkiss Records, Bloc Party has announced that they will be playing select U.S. tour dates this summer, including a stop at this year’s Lollapalooza. Pre-sale for the U.S. shows begins TODAY and lasts through April 19th. Get your tickets HERE !

ALTERED ZONES

http://www.alteredzones.com/ Chillwave. It's been shoved down our throats over the past couple of years due to its ease of creation and distribution (thank you Ableton Live soft synths and plug-ins; thank you Soundcloud and the blogs that embed you!!), and a lot of it fucking sucks . This year saw some lazy remixes and underwhelming sophomore releases from the first batch of the genre's icons, and the honeymoon phase ended. Disappointment sets in as the blogosphere continues to herald "the next big thing" and humors publicists' requests for coverage-- maybe for the sake of traffic, maybe for the lack of a better voice. You feel a craving for something visceral.

Delicious Scopitone

http://www.deliciouscopitone.com/ Altered Zones was sad to find out this weekend that our Swiss-French friends over at Delicious Scopitone are laying their blog to rest after a year and a half of activity. We talked with founder Emmanuel Ducret about the decision over email…
This 1989 Basotho famo music recording from fascinating land-island-within-South Africa Lesotho oughta set y'all straight for a minute. Accordion and bass heavy. Nice n' smooth. Add to that high-pitched super-hot (perhaps a bit too hot?) whistling and the real mood of this music shakes out. http://awesometapesfromafrica.blogspot.com/

Awesome Tapes from Africa

Spanish producer JMII is one half of electronic duo Astar who recently worked with Hivern Discs (the Barcelona label run by John Talabot), and apparently has a release coming up on 100% Silk . The spiraling, bubbling funk of Lagos lives up to said three credentials entirely. Hey guys, quick survey across the room, who likes… TO DREAM?? If you’re like me and always have your head up in the clouds while feet planted firmly on the vicious ground then this dreamy, air-borne, and altogether rather lovely synth floater from London resident Ellie Roswell will appeal to you. Here’s a new-hard drive transmission from |zany| Brooklyn producer D.V Caputo (whom we’ve featured once or twice before). On this particular instance the trans-galactic voyager appears to be en-route to planet Sash by way of amphetamine-addled informercial digi- funk, and the road conditions pertaining to globular clusters seem less than hospitable vis a vis the traveling vessel, to put it delicately.

Weekly Tape Deck

Seems like it’s been ages since we posted about Aussie bros Wizard Oz though they’ve continued to put out quality releases in my ear’s absence. Next up is their Flashing Lights tape and they’ve sent over the first song and it’s video. I’m now sure how blatantly wanton the title is supposed to be but “Pull Out Slow” is an easy-going, wispy track with light vocals and rounded guitar riffs. Though the video is angular 90′s montage static, it lends itself nicely to the song’s personality. Honeydrum created a video for the b-side on their upcoming Stranger Calls 7″. This band is known for constantly putting out tapes and songs but I’m always befuddled at how they are never unsteady in the quality of work they release.

That’s what Theresa Andersson is all about. I usually roll my eyes at musicians who love to loop, but between Andersson and Andrew Bird, I’m starting to respect artists who can do it right. You may remember the video in which Andersson runs around her kitchen , adding layers to perform “Birds Fly Away.” That video makes clear that Andersson knows how to build a song, and “Hold On To Me” finds her growing into a dissonance that suits her. Falling hard for "Via" from Mombassa, Kenya's W@zushi & YOme . Thanks to Fader 's Benjamin Lebrave and his Lungu Lungu column for highlighting the track, produced by YOme's Manager/Producer/Father Wawesh Mjanja . A self-described "Kenyan Visionary," Mjanja helped found the label Penya Africa before moving from Nairobi to coastal Mombassa. According to Fader, he's been producing forward-thinking tunes for "a number of promising young artists" like his daughter and W@zushi, a Swahili rap duo.
