Which States Ban Atheists from Holding Public Office? | Friendly Atheist
Looks like the Cecil Bothwell case is getting quite a bit of national attention . Bothwell is the newly-elected Asheville, North Carolina city councilperson… who also happens to be an atheist. Some of the attention has been good… One man from Brooklyn, N.Y., sent him a $50 campaign donation. And he’s just sold 19 copies online of his self-published book, “The Prince of War,” a criticism of world-famous evangelist the Rev. Billy Graham, who lives in Montreat. Why Do Atheists Care So Much About Religion? | Rationalists's Blog

Poe's Law is an axiom suggesting that it's difficult to distinguish between parodies of religious fundamentalism (or, more generally, parodies of any crackpot or extremist belief) and its genuine proponents, since they both seem equally insane. For example, some conservatives consider noted homophobe Fred Phelps to be so over-the-top that they argue he's a "deep cover liberal" trying to discredit more mainstream homophobes. by Aug 7
When we are young our parents tell us we can be anything we want when we are older and that we should follow our dreams. Once we become adults, though, they tell us to forget about our pointless dreams because we wont make any money trying to achieve them. They say we should just find something that pays the bills. Who's fault is this then, the child's for believing what their parents say, or the parents for giving children false hope? This is basically a huge problem that philosophers, economists, sociologists, and psychologists are confronting due to the current job market.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. We, on our side, are praying to Him to give us victory, because we believe we are right; but those on the other side pray to Him, too, for victory, believing they are right. Why Atheism?
Just about everyone is an atheist when it comes to other gods — the gods that other people believe in or that nobody believes in anymore. I’m an atheist about all gods because there's no reliable evidence for any god, or even for Jesus. There is also extensive evidence that Jesus and all gods are fictional characters — myths created mainly by primitive people who had little understanding of how our universe operates. We all like myths and other stories, but we don't have to believe them. This heading is a compilation of the words of René Descartes and my partner Lee. A mixture of aged wisdom and contemporary thought that goes very well together indeed. René of course meant that because he can think, he therefore must exist to be able to do so.

Logical Fallacies and How to Spot Them
Logical Fallacies and How to Spot Them In the Evolution vs. Creationism debate, it is important to be able to spot all the logical fallacies that Creationists tend to throw around.NOTE: These lists are meant to identify possible problems in the Bible, especially problems which are inherent in a literalist or fundamentalist interpretation. Some of the selections may be resolvable on certain interpretations--after all, almost any problem can be eliminated with suitable rationalizations--but it is the reader's obligation to test this possibility and to decide whether it really makes appropriate sense to do this. To help readers in this task, these lists are aimed at presenting examples where problems may exist given certain allowable (but not always obligatory) assumptions. It should be kept in mind that a perfect and omnipotent God could, should, and likely would see to it that such problems did not exist in a book which s/he had inspired. It should also be kept in mind that what is and is not an absurdity is to some extent a matter of opinion. You are entitled to disagree with the author that these are, in fact, absurdities.
Bible Absurdities: Absurdities in the Bible
Fundie or fundy (plural fundies) is a pejorative slang term used to refer to religious fundamentalists of any religion or denomination, although it is primarily directed towards fundamentalist Christians. The term is intentionally derogatory, and is used most commonly by those opposed to the Christian Right movement. This is a fairly accurate definition, and it serves my purposes quite well. But what term should you use if you don’t want the built-in negative slant? In other words, what should a journalist call these people?
