Club Academia: Videos for Students by Students by @CTuckerEnglish

It began when Shilpa Yarlagadda, a Palo Alto high school student, created her first instructional video for chemistry. She remembers, “I made a video on Solubility Rules and it wasn’t that great, but I was amazed by how easy it was to make the video and how much I learned through the process. Making the video forced me to really relearn the material and understand it in depth so I could explain it to someone else.”

Shilpa joined forces with a fellow student, Roya Huang, and Club Academia was born! Currently, Club Academia has 17 students creating videos and 13 teachers who approve videos to ensure the material is accurate and high quality. Below is a video created by Tatiana Klein, who was in 8th grade at the time when she recorded this video for a 5th grade student who requested it. Shilpa said they began “Club Academia with the intention of growing it at a local level and to help out a few friends. Club Academia: Videos for Students by Students by @CTuckerEnglish.

Authenticity in assessment, (re-)defined and explained. What is “authentic assessment”?

Authenticity in assessment, (re-)defined and explained

Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was in the Phi Delta Kappan. Download it here: Wiggins.atruetest.kappan89 I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue. (My colleague from the Advisory Board of the Coalition of Essential Schools, Fred Newmann, was the first to use the phrase in a book, a pamphlet for NASSP in 1988 entitled Beyond standardized testing: Assessing authentic academic achievement in secondary schools.

My original argument. Authentic tests are representative challenges within a given discipline. We all know that A2 + B2 = C2. A. 1. Independent Project. What do you do if you hate school or find it boring?

Independent Project

You create your own. That’s what some students did at the Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Under the leadership of 12th grader, Sam Levin, the students designed and participated in a school-within-a-school, dubbed the Independent Project. They got rid of grades, test scores, classes and even teachers (as lecturers). Instead, they learned what they wanted to learn and tried to answer questions that arise from their own curiosity.

Within this setup, teachers serve the role of mentors and facilitators. This unique experiment has helped participating students discover their own passion for learning and proved to educators and parents alike that schools can be radically different than the way they are designed now. Above is a short documentary I made to show how the Independent Project works.
