It’s not often that you get so hooked on someone’s portfolio that you find yourself engrossed in it, slack-jawed for nearly an hour, but that’s exactly what happened when I came across the work of Elle Perez. Focusing predominantly on American’s gay, gender variant, transgender, and genderqueer community, Elle’s portraits have a friendly rawness to them that comes with being completely immersed in the environment she was shooting.
Be it hard-hitting, honest studio portraits or sun-kissed, ragged snaps of Queer Radical Faerie sanctuaries of Tennessee, Elle’s photographs always have a hint of rebellion in them, perhaps influenced by her time photographing punk clubs when she was only 14. On this occasion it was this extraordinary shoot for Document magazine, fusing real-life models with some weird and wonderful illustrated adornments to produce a series which is by turns, funny, intriguing, silly and stylish. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to work out what exactly your eyes are seeing, but the cumulative effect of the photographs confirms how much I like Bela’s work, and that I should develop a more strategic approach to keeping up-do-date with his new projects. Tracey Emin's neon takes over Times Square every night in February. Born in Canada, he was schooled at the Alberta College of Art and the Graduate Design Program at the California Institute of the Arts. Known for his reductive graphic style, Geoff began to show his work in galleries in 1998 at George’s Gallery. His first large scale show was in Japan at Parco Gallery Tokyo.
His work is in the collection of the SF Museum of Modern Art, Exhibited in the Cooper Hewitt National Design Biennial, and the California Design Biennial.
