Reinhold Niebuhr, Washington’s Favorite Theologian. (Getty/Alfred Eisenstaedt/LIFE) Reinhold Niebuhr, it seems, is everyone’s favorite theologian. Then-candidate Barack Obama told David Brooks in 2007 that Niebuhr was one of his “favorite philosophers.” There is “serious evil in the world, and hardship and pain,” Obama said. “And we should be humble and modest in our belief we can eliminate those things. But we shouldn’t use that as an excuse for cynicism and inaction.”

President Jimmy Carter said, “Niebuhr was always present in my mind in a very practical way, particularly when I became President and was facing the constant threat of a nuclear war, which would have destroyed the world.” A new documentary called An American Conscience: The Reinhold Niebuhr Story, tries to capture and explain why Niebuhr is experiencing something of a renaissance.

Reinhold Niebuhr was a theologian of the nuclear age. Sin, irony, tragedy. Jimmy Carter could quote by heart from Niebuhr’s 1932 book Moral Man and Immoral Society. Events turned his way. Human society is totally interdependent—that's a huge advantage, but also a huge risk to our survival — Quartz. A few years ago, a man named Mike Vilhauer was fishing near Sunset Lake, in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. He wandered into the woods to look for bait, and promptly got lost. For the next five days, he lived off the land—drinking from a stream, sleeping in a rocky cave, eating the occasional dandelion. After Vilhauer’s rescue, national and international news outlets breathlessly described his “fight for survival,” “against the odds.” Vilhauer’s survival seems like an impressive achievement, until you stop to consider that he was simply doing what humans did, day in and day out, for most of the last 200,000 years. Of necessity, our distant ancestors had wide-ranging survival skills: they foraged, hunted, herded, and built shelters.

It’s only in the last few millennia that we have taken on increasingly specialized roles. Today, we are fry cooks and nuclear physicists, bloggers and plumbers—but few of us retain the general skills that were once a prerequisite for survival. The President’s Secret Air Force. The following is expanded and adapted from Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself—While the Rest of Us Die (Simon & Schuster, 2017). The photo this winter of a smiling Mar-a-Lago guest with the uniformed military aide who carries the “nuclear football” was a rare—and unease-inducing—public reminder that, just steps from the president at all times, are the keys to end the world as we know it. Americans normally see very little of the massive apparatus that surrounds the modern presidency—and it’s easy to forget that much of it exists primarily to help ensure the commander in chief, wherever he is in the world, is able to access the nation’s nuclear weapons and launch a retaliatory strike.

Was mythology something you were formally introduced to in an academic setting or did you discover it through the wellspring of religion or entertainment media? Both, actually. But at the same time I was very much aware of myth through comics, which in Jack Kirby's wake were more myth-conscious than they'd ever been. That's easy: hippies. And dozens of anecdotes, articles, blogs, and books will appear on your screen. Overwhelmingly, this question is posed by women, discussed by women, and answered by women. This, ironically, is an essential reason for these so called man-deserts—men are simply not being asked to contribute their opinions and perspectives. And the good men themselves are increasingly less likely to offer their point of view, for many reasons. I do not seek to apportion blame here, on either side, but simply to address this question from the seldom-heard voice that is the object of the question itself: good men.

The last 100 years of suffragettes, feminists, and political correctness have challenged and continue to challenge thousands of years of patriarchy—and rightly so. While we struggle to adjust to the new and still evolving status quo, the war of the sexes has taken millions of casualties. One day it was my turn. Esoteric Online. Polish Painter Who Learned To “Photograph Dreams” – His Works Will Give You Nightmares. Let us take you on a journey through the curious mind of a Polish artist, Zdzisław Beksiński, who made a name for himself with his dystopian surrealism paintings, filled with post-apocalyptic imagery and nightmarish creatures.

Show Full Text The artist is no longer with us to better explain the vast roster of over 300 of his works, but he used to say: "I wish to paint in such a manner as if I were photographing dreams.” And that is exactly what popped into my head when I first saw his paintings. Even, though, they utilize recognizable everyday objects, those are paired and arranged in ways only the dream world could sustain in a single picture. These unseen combinations gave birth to mind-bending scenarios, which do build an anxious feeling while looking at them. The Definitive Guide to Cholesterol. That makes it easy. With all the talk of fighting, battling, combating and beating cholesterol into submission, you’d think it had a black plastic body suit and James Earl Jones’ voice.

Big Pharma has, dutifully created quite an arsenal for our supposed defense, and the medical community has been a willing faction, delivering the rhetoric that would incite us all to pick up arms. Now if only we could put down the Big Macs. And the Ding Dongs, HoHos, Twinkies and…you get the point. But the insidious rogue, that menacing villain isn’t to be found at the helm of the Death Star. Turns out, there is an enemy within and it’s not even cholesterol. Yes, the message these days seems to be that no number is too low when it comes to cholesterol (except HDL but we’ll get to that later).

Cholesterol is a waxy, charming lipid gracing every cell’s membrane and our blood plasma. So, what’s with all the acronyms on my cholesterol profile, you ask. Next, there are low density lipoproteins, LDL. Oh, boy. The Content. How Your Energy System and Imagination Are Connected. From BodyMindSoulSpirit.com A Conversation with Sadhguru Sadhguru: There is a certain geometry to the physical existence and to the energy existence. Everything in the universe, from the atomic to the cosmic, works the way it does because of geometric perfection. One of the most fundamental and the most stable forms in geometry is a triangle.

To work with your mind and imagination, it is important to adjust the alignment of the two triangles at least to some extent. With the necessary alignment, you will be able to exercise your imagination in such a way that you can manifest what you want outside of you. The Importance of Keeping the Chakras Mobile There are one hundred and fourteen chakras in the body. The way the chakras move depends on what you do with yourself. You should be able to do everything well, with a little practice. To be able to move this complex triangular structure of your physiology the way you want it requires a different level of sadhana. Having blasted the Trump administration for their hyprocritical flip-flop from "loving WikiLeaks" to "arrest Assange," Ron Paul made his feelings very clear on what this signals: "If we allow this president to declare war on those who tell the truth, we have only ourselves to blame.

" Today he sits down with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for a live interview... "The CIA has been deeply humiliated as a result of our ongoing publications so this is a preemptive move by the CIA to try and discredit our publications and create a new category for Wikileaks and other national security reporters to strip them of First Amendment protections," Assange said in a preview clip from the interview below...: Full interview below...

New Research Links Hand Sanitizer Use With Thyroid Cancer | Wake Up World. By Carolanne Wright Contributing writer for Wake Up World A new study published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine may give you pause for thought the next time you reach for your favorite hand sanitizer. We’ve long known that the chemicals present in these products aren’t the best thing to be applying to the skin, not to mention they’re exceptionally drying. But occasional use can’t be that harmful, right? As it turns out, using chemical hand sanitizers can actually triple the risk of developing thyroid cancer. The research team reviewed data from over 900 patients — 462 adults with thyroid cancer in 2010 and 2011 and compared them with 498 control subjects. Although not involved with the study, Laura Koniver MD summarizes the study’s results as follows: Women with any occupational exposure at all were 48% more likely to develop thyroid cancer.Men with any occupational exposure at all were 300% more likely to develop thyroid cancer — 3 X the normal rates of thyroid cancers!

The Cannabis flower is a special one for many reasons. Not only for the relaxed, joyful, euphoric and creative sensations it brings, but for how it specifically expands our consciousness. When the user (i.e. receiver) is tuned into the cannabis frequency, that is, tuned into the plant's intention aligned with our own, awareness often grows into areas of the unknown which instantly changes our vibration. The reason cannabis does this so well is due to its alliance with Gaia and the human template. It's why THC, the primary psychoactive component in cannabis is so welcomed by the endocannabinoid system of the brain.

That system is innate to the cannabis plant. DEA 'Chief Propagandist' Says Agency Knows Cannabis is Safe, Keeps it Illegal for Profit This is how incredibly aligned it is with the human. By Dr. Joseph Mercola Contributing writer for Wake Up World Photobiology is the scientific study of the interaction between light and living organisms, and specifically, the therapeutic use of light to improve health and treat disease. In the interview featured below, Dr. Alexander Wunsch, a physician, researcher and one of the leading experts in photobiology, explains the modern significance of photobiology. In this article we will also look at the historical development of photobiology, to help you get a better appreciation of its incredible healing potential. I recently interviewed Dr.

Historical Use of Light Therapy Light has been used therapeutically for thousands of years. Humans have not only evolved to adapt to sunlight but also to the influence of fire — near-infrared and mid-infrared radiation that is very low in in the blue range wavelength, which is also emitted by incandescent light sources. The First Phototherapeutic Device The Science of Light in the 19th Century Dr.

Dr. Dr. How LED Lighting May Compromise Your Health. By Dr. Mercola Can light affect your health? In this interview, Dr. Alexander Wunsch, a world class expert on photobiology, shares the hidden dangers of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting that most people are completely unaware of. In fact, this could potentially be one of the most important video interviews I've done, as it has enormous impacts — not only on preventing blindness as you age but it is also a pervasive hidden risk factor for sabotaging your health.

Largely as a result of energy efficiency, there's been a major transition to using LED as a primary indoor light source. However, the heat generated by incandescent light bulbs, which is infrared radiation, is actually beneficial to your health, and hence worth the extra cost. There are major downsides to LEDs that are not fully appreciated. If you chose to ignore these new insights, it can have very serious long-term ramifications. What Is Light? Physicists think that infrared radiation is just thermal waste. 1. 2. The Battle for Social World Domination: The Stacks : taking over your life | Mediabrands Publishing. Everything You Need to Know About Animism | Sarah Anne Lawless. “There is no environment ‘out there’ separate from us.

The environment is embedded in us. We are as much a part of our surroundings as as the trees and birds and fish, the sky, water and rocks.” ~ David Suzuki What is Animism? The Latin animus means “the rational soul, intelligence, consciousness, and mental powers” and the feminine anima means “soul, living being, mind, and breath”. If you collect all the words for soul from all the languages around the world, almost all of their roots simply mean “breath”, insinuating that the soul and spirits in general are invisible and intangible.

In the 1670s, the term anima mundi, meaning “soul of the world”, was used to describe the teachings of ancient Greek philosophers Pythagoras and Plato who believed the world and the universe itself was infused with an animate soul. You can try to have one without the other, however, in most cultures the two go hand in hand. The Beliefs of Animism Shamanism is not animism. The Rituals of Animism Alignment. There are some wild claims out there for the power of visualisation. Things like: if you can imagine it, then it will come to you. Of course there’s always been a huge market for telling people things they want to hear, even if it’s complete rubbish.

Still, visualisation can certainly be important in reaching goals. Much research has been conducted in athletics which shows the power of visualisation. There is now hardly a sport left that doesn’t have psychologists telling players to visualise their performance. Visualisation is also used in psychological therapies to help people change their behaviour.

Effective visualisation So, we know that visualisations can be effective in helping us reach goals.
