With Shaping Fluid, Christina Schou Christensen looks at ceramic glazes – normally used as a protective or ornamental finish for earthenware – from a new perspective.
Christensen says that firing is a crucial step in the creative process: ‘With its unpredictable results, it acts as a sort of drafting process. The kiln, firing tools, ceramics, temperature and melting point of the glaze are like drafting tools that reveal new possibilities.’ Shaping Fluid was included in our Salone del Mobile 2013 coverage under the theme of 'Making It Yourself'. 'The younger generation of designers isn’t sitting back and waiting for a manufacturer to come along.
They make things happen themselves.’ This is what Sam Hecht of Industrial Facility had to say when we bumped into him at the ceremony for the Lexus Design Award, for which Hecht mentored selected entrants. Researchers develop 3D-printed flying drones capable of self-assembly.
News: a research team in Zürich has created a flock of helicopter robots that can detect each others' positions and join together to create a larger flying machine. The Distributed Flight Array (DFA) has been developed by a team of researchers at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control (IDSC) at ETH Zürich university in Switzerland. Each robot has a 3D-printed hexagonal plastic chassis with magnets fixed to the sides of the frame and a single propeller fitted in the middle.
Independently, the honeycomb-shaped robots fly in an erratic and uncontrolled way. However, the robots are able to detect each other, link to form a bigger craft and then fly in a controlled manner as a single unit. Each independent module exchanges information with the others and uses sensors to determine how much thrust it needs for the array to take off and maintain flight. Watch a video of the DFA system in action here: Here's a film showing the concept behind the flying system: Photographs are by Dr.
A Softer World 4: Let's Do Something Wrong by Make That Thing. Joey Comeau and Emily Horne have been making A Softer World since 2003. What is the future of critique, the essence of design culture, in this increasingly connected world? Is the speed at which images circulate around the globe, advancing the level of conversation within and amongst design disciplines. When placed in opposition, the time-honored design school tradition of convening public debate around a set of ideas, presents a stark contrast to the typical comment forum found in social media. Taken together, however, the spectrum of valuable means of gathering feedback about one's work becomes visible. The proliferation of device culture, social networking, and cloud technology are changing the way we work and connect on a daily basis.
For designers, this means that technology is not only transforming the process of production, but also the processes through which we share, critique, and organize ourselves around the work we do. "The Morpholio Project is first, and foremost an experiment in distributed intelligence," says Mark Collins, Co-Creator. In-between Spaces by Office Jarrik Ouburg et al. Thirty-five white perforated sheets gently sway in the wind in an alleyway between two Amsterdam canal houses. A white wooden door – also perforated – allows access into the alley. Narrow typography on the wall beside the door gives the name of the installation: Tussen-ruimte (In-between Space) #1. Tussen-ruimte is a collaborative installation project by Office Jarrik Ouburg, Non-fiction and TAAK, in partnership with Castrum Peregrini. ‘Amsterdam celebrates the 400th birthday of its canal belt this year,’ says architect Jarrik Ouburg, who initiated the project together with multidisciplinary firm Non-Fiction.
‘Since 2010 the canals of Amsterdam have been classified a Unesco World Heritage Site, which means that the conservation area is more heavily protected against changes than ever before. With this installation, we want to challenge the static state of affairs that comes with preservation.’ Images Courtesy of Office Jarrik Ouburg. Metal Origami by Ilan Garibi. The Wheel of the Future is Here and It's Shaped Like a Cube. It only took a few thousand years, but someone has finally reinvented the wheel—and it actually works better than the original. Skateboarder David Patrick’s crazy SharkWheel was discovered by chance while he was creating a cube out of six soft pieces of piping. Patrick dropped the cube by accident, and to his amazement, the piece started rolling and it didn’t stop. You’d think that a cube-shaped wheel would be completely counterproductive, but Patrick’s angular SharkWheel has proved to be smoother and faster than a conventional skateboard wheel.
The magic appears to be in the materials and the helix-shape which makes it possible for the wheel to take on virtually any terrain at speeds that would not be seen with a traditional wheel. Moreover, the sine-wave pattern of the wheel’s treads reduce the surface area that makes contact with the ground, in turn reducing friction and speeding up rotation. Check out the video of it in action here. +SharkWheel Via The Atlantic. Shark Wheel - the SQUARE skateboarding wheel that shreds! by SharkWheel.com and SharkWheelSkate.com.

Elon Musk to Unveil Ultra High-Speed Hyperloop Train Plans by August 12. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX just announced plans to unveil the high-speed Hyperloop transportation system under an open source license by August 12th, 2013.
The futuristic transportation design will reportedly be a cross between a Concorde, a rail gun and air hockey table – and it could transport passengers from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes flat. The Hyperloop is conceived as a tunnel-based tube system with weather-proof, crash-proof, solar-powered rail-less vehicles that would be twice as fast as planes. The system could work both above and below ground level. Musk announced the project in July 2012 and estimated that the cost of the San Francisco-Los Angeles Hyperloop would be about $6 billion, one tenth of the price proposed for building a conventional high speed rail between those cities. The trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles would take only half an hour. Via Treehugger and Fast Company. A New Tool for Comparing Cities. For the last fifty years Richard Wurman – architect, graphic designer and founder of the TED Conferences – has been dedicated to creating a platform that compares cities.
In Wurman’s early studies, he quickly learned that comparing global cities was no easy task. Cities use very different languages to describe their assets, from planning principles to land use types to social statistics. “They don’t collect their information the same way. They don’t describe themselves with the same legend,” he tells Nate Berg of Next City. Thanks to sophisticated mapping tools, delving into the statistical data of numerous cities has become far more manageable than in 1962, when Wurman produced his first comparative analysis using clay models of 50 different cities. Wurman’s analog-driven statistical analysis has turned into the Urban Observatory, a website that allows users to choose from 15 variables and easily compare the public data of up to 16 cities around the world in real time.

Dear Inhabitants - This week a new report revealed that Arctic ice melt is a ticking time bomb set to release over 50 gigatons of methane in a climate catastrophe that could cost the world $70 trillion. In another alarming story, the US military was responsible for dropping four deactivated bombs on the Great Barrier Reef after a botched training mission. We also shared the story of a toxic yet beautiful lagoon in England that was dyed black to stop swimmers from taking a dip in its waters. And a new study shows that that there may be a dark side to 3d printing technology - nanoparticles emitted during the manufacturing process can be hazardous to human health.

Copper Literally Grows To Create These Lamps. Vessel Gallery is proud to present a new spectacular lighting collection by studio Odd Matter called OverNight. Traditional copper plating techniques are modernized using stained glass panels in rich shades of ruby, amber and mother of pearl. The pieces are held together by copper strips that are immersed overnight in an electro-plating bath.
The pieces “grow” and adhere in the wee hours of the night as more copper is formed, bonding all the edges together to make a tight-fitting frame. The process also changes copper’s appearance from smooth and flat to a bubbly, effervescent surface. This is a pretty badass process. You can check these lamps out in person at Vessel Gallery during the London Design Festival from September 14th through October 20th.
Fashion Doodles by Alana Dee Haynes. When I was little, I used to doodle on magazines. I’d give models mustaches and moles and devilish goatees. I’m sure you used to do it, too.
