The Secret to Life in 2 Words. ‘Drama of Life Before Birth': Landmark Work, Five Decades Later. In the five decades since Lennart Nilsson’s portrait of an 18-week-old human fetus appeared on the cover of the April 30, 1965, issue of LIFE — along with other, equally jaw-dropping pictures across multiple pages inside the magazine — the debate about when life begins and who, ultimately, wields control of a woman’s body, both before and after birth, has only intensified.

Religious, ethical, legal and medical arguments swirl around the issues of conception, contraception and abortion, and few political “hot button” issues are more radioactive than that of (put in the simplest and, perhaps, the most incendiary possible terms) the “right to choose” versus a “right to life.” In 1965, however, the central question gripping most everyone who saw Nilsson’s pictures was the far more prosaic, and readily answerable, “How on earth did he do that?” As LIFE told its readers when Nilsson’s pictures first appeared in the magazine’s pages:

“Don’t Read Books!” A 12th-Century Zen Poem. By Maria Popova “It’s annoying for others to have to hear you.” We live in a culture that often romanticizes books as the tender and exhilarating love-making to the “orgasm without release” of Alan Watts’s admonition against our media gluttony — an antidote to the frantic multitasking of modern media, refuge from the alleged evils of technology, an invitation for slow, reflective thinking in a fast-paced age obsessed with productivity.

Books, Kafka memorably asserted, are “the axe for the frozen sea inside us.” Given I spend the majority of my waking hours reading and writing about books, I have certainly bought into that romantic notion. But everything, it turns out, is a matter of context: Imagine my amusement in chancing upon a poem titled “Don’t Read Books!” In the altogether wonderful slim volume Zen Poems: Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets (public library). Don’t read books! Donating = Loving Bringing you (ad-free) Brain Pickings takes hundreds of hours each month. Share on Tumblr. 01_Handbook.pdf. OODA Loop: A Comprehensive Guide to the OODA Loop. Assertiveness. Assertiveness is the quality of being self-assured and confident without being aggressive. In the field of psychology and psychotherapy, it is a learnable skill and mode of communication. Dorland's Medical Dictionary defines assertiveness as: "a form of behavior characterized by a confident declaration or affirmation of a statement without need of proof; this affirms the person's rights or point of view without either aggressively threatening the rights of another (assuming a position of dominance) or submissively permitting another to ignore or deny one's rights or point of view".[1] During the second half of the 20th century, assertiveness was increasingly singled out as a behavioral skill taught by many personal development experts, behavior therapists, and cognitive behavioral therapists.

Assertiveness is often linked to self-esteem. The term and concept was popularized to the general public by books such as Your Perfect Right: A Guide to Assertive Behavior (1970) by Robert E. A poor man asked the Buddha, “Why am I so poor?” Emoto's Water Experiment: The Power of Thoughts | High Existence. Through the 1990’s, Dr. Masaru Emoto performed a series of experiments observing the physical effect of words, prayers, music and environment on the crystalline structure of water. Emoto hired photographers to take pictures of water after being exposed to the different variables and subsequently frozen so that they would form crystalline structures. The results were nothing short of remarkable.. For example: Water Before Prayer Water After Prayer Biwako Lake (polluted) Shimanto River (clean) After observing these miraculous results, Dr.

“You make me sick, I will kill you” “Adolph Hitler” “Thank you” “Love and Appreciation” As you can tell, the water stamped with positive words is far more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing than that stamped with dark, negative phrases. Oh and by the way, the average human body is 60% water. Some may say that this could be the work of biased photographers or biased photo selection by Emoto himself. “This is one of the more difficult areas to clarify. Seven body language tricks to make anyone instantly like you. There's no question that body language is important.

And, according to Leil Lowndes in her book "How To Talk To Anyone," you can capture - and hold - anyone's attention without even saying a word. We've selected the best body language techniques from the book and shared them below: The Flooding Smile "Don't flash an immediate smile when you greet someone," says Lowndes. If you do, it appears as if anyone in your line of sight would receive that same smile. Instead, pause and look at the other person's face for a second, and then let a "big, warm, responsive smile flood over your face and overflow into your eyes.

" Even though the delay is less than a second, it will convince people your smile is sincere and personalized for them. Sticky Eyes "Pretend your eyes are glued to your conversation partner's with sticky warm taffy," Lowndes advises. You can also try counting your conversation partner's blinks. Epoxy Eyes The Big-Baby Pivot People are very conscious of how you react to them. 2 Psychology Rules for Getting Better at Chess--and Life. We often use chess as a metaphor for life, business, and other competitive sports, because it's such a strategic game. Coder and chess player Gautam Narula offers us two simple rules that sum up the psychology of chess-and, by extension, winning in other areas.

In an incredibly detailed post about how to quickly get better at chess, Narula says: If chess is anything, it is a game of second chances. Chess, like life, rewards perseverance. I've turned countless losses into draws and wins because my opponents got overconfident while I dug in. There's a footnote to the second rule, saying if the situation is absolutely hopeless, it's good etiquette to resign rather than drag the game on needlessly. "If my opponent were playing [reigning World Chess Champion and number one player in the world] Magnus Carlsen in this position, would Carlsen be able to win? " The whole post is a great resource for anyone interested in chess, but the psychology part applies to us all. Photo by malias. "The Way a Person Does One Thing Is the Way They Do Everything" There's something that is far more important than reaching one of your goals: the process that leads you there.

If you're going to do something-no matter what it is-do it to the best of your ability. Developing a good process and solid work ethic can come from everything you do, not just the one thing you're trying to accomplish. Writer and former athlete Tobi Atkins rethought the way he lived his life when he heard an old zen saying from one of his mentors: "The way a person does one thing is the way they do everything" I used to be a someone who would cut corners on what I thought were small things.

For example, I would make my bed but I wouldn't tuck the sheets all the way in. I would clean the house but not pull the lounge out and vacuum under. It may seem like you're just skimping on the unimportant stuff, or saving energy for your big tasks, but repetition makes a habit. Of course, there's a difference between not cutting corners and perfectionism. Photo by Stephen Korecky. 9 Quotes By Will Smith That Will Inspire You To Live Your Own Life. I love Will Smith. Mostly, just throw it away. 2) “If you’re absent during my struggle, don’t expect to be present during my success.” That’s the thing about people and so-called friends. They only see the success and what it can do for them. So be very wary. The former aren’t doing you any favors. 3) “Don’t chase people. Yep! The rest, will take care of itself. 4) “Stop letting people who do so little for you control so much of your mind, feelings & emotions.” Focus on the other important ones instead.

6 Breathing Exercises to Relax in 10 Minutes or Less. Don’t wait until fight or flight kicks in before minding your breath. Controlled breathing not only keeps the mind and body functioning at their best, it can also lower blood pressure, promote feelings of calm and relaxation and help us de-stress. While the effects of breathing techniques on anxiety haven’t yet been studied at length (at least not in a controlled clinical setting), many experts encourage using the breath as a means of increasing awareness, mindfulness or, for the yogis among us, finding that elusive state of Zen. To get to the bottom of the breath work, Greatist spoke to breathing expert Dr. Alison McConnell, yoga instructor Rebecca Pacheco and psychologist Dr.

Ellen Langer. But follow closely: breathing easy isn’t quite as easy as it sounds. From the confines of a bed, a desk or anyplace where negativity finds its way, consider these six breathing techniques to help keep calm and carry on. 1. How it’s done: Balance can do a body good, beginning with the breath. 2. 3. 4. Help for the Shy Guy — Step 1: Understand the Nature of Your Shyness.
