With Twitter's growing importance as a tool for citizen journalism, multimedia uploading and sharing tools are more relevant than ever before. Services like Twitpic, while still fun for vanity purposes, have played a critical role in spreading newsworthy images from eyewitnesses who have been present with mobile phones at world-changing events. Events such as the evacuation of Times Square , the earthquake in Haiti , the protests in Egypt and many others have been graphically and valuably portrayed on Twitter via services like Twitpic. And occasionally, Twitpic images not only depict the news, they become the news, themselves. Last year, a photo of a transit worker sleeping on the job was posted to Twitpic and caused an uproar in the media.

Here, we bring you eight excellent language-related Twitter tools that will help with defining terms, explaining hashtags, analyzing text and finding more concise ways of phrasing tweets. Post-Oprah and apres-Ashton, Twittermania is definitely sliding down the backlash slope of the hype cycle. It’s not just the predictable wave of naysaying after the predictable waves of sliced-breadism and bandwagon-chasing. We’re beginning to see some data. Nielsen, the same people who do TV ratings, recently noted that more than 60% of new Twitter users fail to return the following month. http://blog.sfgate.com/rheingold/2009/05/11/twitter-literacy-i-refuse-to-make-up-a-twittery-name-for-it/

Can you become influential on Twitter merely by Tweeting a lot?

A bit more than a month ago, I asked the question : Can you become influential on Twitter, and get a high Klout Score, merely by Tweeting a lot? To test this, I set up an experiment, which involves four Twitter bots that automatically tweet the output of the Unix fortune command-line application. Fortune randomly outputs mildly humorous quotes, and was often used on Unix to produce a ‘welcome message of the day’ upon login. The four bots Tweet once every minute, once every five minutes, once every fifteen minutes and once every thirty minutes respectively. They are completely anonymous, have no avatars or custom user profiles set, and do not follow anyone. http://wallblog.co.uk/2010/12/06/can-you-become-influential-on-twitter-merely-by-tweeting-a-lot/
