“The most powerful entity in the United States is riddled with conflicts of interest,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said after reviewing the Government Accountability Office report. The GAO detailed instance after instance of top executives of corporations and financial institutions using their influence as Federal Reserve directors to financially benefit their firms, and, in at least one instance, themselves. Sanders said he will work with leading economists to develop legislation to restructure the Fed and bar the banking industry from picking Fed directors.

Birthright Citizenship in the United States: A Global Comparison

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” -- U.S. Const. amend. XIV, § 1 Introduction Every year, 300,000 to 400,000 children are born to illegal immigrants in the United States. Eminent legal scholars and jurists, including Professor Peter Schuck of Yale Law School and U.S. Advocates of maintaining this citizenship policy argue that the plain language of the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment protects automatic birthright citizenship for all children born to illegal and temporary aliens. The overwhelming majority of the world’s countries do not offer automatic citizenship to everyone born within their borders.

The Bretton Woods system was the first example of a fully negotiated monetary order intended to govern monetary relations among independent nation-states. The chief features of the Bretton Woods system were an obligation for each country to adopt a monetary policy that maintained the exchange rate by tying its currency to gold and the ability of the IMF to bridge temporary imbalances of payments. Also, there was a need to address the lack of cooperation among other countries and to prevent competitive devaluation of the currencies as well. Origins[edit] Interwar period[edit] A high level of agreement among the powerful (nations) that failed to coordinate exchange rates during the interwar period had exacerbated political tensions facilitated the decisions reached by the Bretton Woods Conference.
