Recent Earthquakes in Hawai`i - Index Map

Based on feedback from our users (you), we have made the following adjustments: Auto-refresh: The webpage now automatically refreshes when the page has been inactive for 10 minutes. If you move your mouse on the webpage, the timer restarts. Earthquake list: The earthquake list has been moved to a tab behind the control panel on the left. The dots presented in this map represent earthquake location calculated by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and its partners. Earthquakes are routinely reviewed by a seismic data analyst and updates posted to this web site.

When an earthquake occurs, seismic waves are created, which propagate away from the focus or hypocenter. The magnitude of an event is determined from the strength of the seismic waves detected at each station.

Helens.July 06, 2016 Every year, Mount St. Helens gets an average of 162 inches of rain and about 40 feet of snow. So where does all the water go? Some of it enters rivers and streams that originate on the volcano and some of it enters the groundwater system. Using a geophysical method called Controlled-Source Audio-Magnetotellurics, researchers located two aquifers at Mount St. Knowing more about groundwater at Mount St. Read more at Where is the Hot Rock, and Where is the Groundwater—Using CSAMT to Map Beneath and Around Mount St. Recent Mount Hood earthquake swarm typical for this Oregon volcano.May 16, 2016 At Mount Hood, a swarm of small earthquakes was detected May 15-16, 2016. The earthquakes in this swarm are located 2-3 miles south of the summit of Mount Hood at depths of 2-3 miles below sea level. For more information, see Mount Hood Monitoring and the Cascade Volcano Observatory Weekly Update.

Long Valley Observatory. Earthquake swarm under Mammoth MountainFebruary 06, 2014 An earthquake swarm under Mammoth Mountain (Mono County, CA), which started slowly on February 3, 2014 intensified in the early hours of February 5 with many small-magnitude earthquakes occurring in rapid succession, a phenomenon known as "spasmodic bursts. " The largest earthquake over the ~ 4 hours of heightened activity, a magnitude 3.0, occurred shortly after 1am local time.

The swarm is emanating from depths of about 5 km (~ 3 miles) below the surface. Most earthquakes in the swarm are too small to be felt, but the magnitude 3.0 earthquake was felt by a few people in the town of Mammoth Lakes. Presently, earthquake activity beneath the mountain remains above background levels. Earthquake swarms, including spasmodic bursts, occur periodically beneath Mammoth Mountain. CalVO deformation monitoring sensors at Mammoth Mountain show no significant change. View Plot: Mammoth Mountain Hypocenter Counts - Feb. 2014 Swarm. GOES Project Volcano Watch. Stromboli online.
