This is an excerpt from the record Years, created by Bartholomäus Traubeck, which features seven recordings from different Austrian trees including Oak, Maple, Walnut, and Beech.
What you are hearing is an Ash tree's year ring data. Every tree sounds vastly unique due to varying characteristics of the rings, such as strength, thickness and rate of growth. Keep in mind that the tree rings are being translated into the language of music, rather than sounding musical in and of themselves. Traubeck's one-of-a-kind record player uses a PlayStation Eye Camera and a stepper motor attached to its control arm. It relays the data to a computer with a program called Ableton Live. Hats off to Traubeck for coming up with the ingenious method to turn a simple slice of wood into a beautiful unique arraignment. Watch this: the 12 tricks of Disney's trade. Birds’ Positions On Electric Wires Turned Into Spellbinding Melody. “Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires,” recalls Brazilian composer and filmmaker Jarbas Agnelli.
“I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn’t the most original idea in the universe. The stop-motion video is the fifth video performance from the GAME OVER Project and was directed by Guillaume Reymond, the same artist responsible from the amazing human Tetris short. According to Reymond, it took over four hours to film the Pac-Man performance, which required the human pixels to move from seat to seat as shots were snapped. Check it out along with some other great GAME OVER Project videos that Reymond has filmed over the years, below. Japanese Musicians Recreate Mozart's Turkish March Using Bowls and Spoons. American director and stop-motion animator PES just released his beautiful 2010 stop motion short The Deep on his official YouTube channel in high definition.
The murky underwater world of fish, seaweed and other aquatic lifeforms is created entirely from old hand tools, nut crackers, calipers, film lenses, faucet knobs, chains, and skeleton keys—the exact opposite of what you might expect to animate sea life with—demonstrating why PES is clearly a master of his craft. The clip appeared briefly as part of Showtime Network’s “Short Stories” back in 2010 but later taken down. The re-release is accompanied by a limited edition screen print. Nothing is as it Seems: The Art of Illusion at Science Gallery. Some of most amazing contemporary artists working in the realm of optical illusion have been brought together for a fantastic show called Illusion at Science Gallery in Dublin, Ireland.
Curated by psychologist and author Richard Wiseman and researched by magician and escapologist (!) Paul Gleeson, the exhibition explores the myriad ways the mind is tricked through sensory deception. The show includes works from Roseline de Thelin, Gregory Barsamian, Matt Kenyon, Jonty Hurwitz (previously), and many more. Illusion runs through September 29, 2013. The Lake. London-based artist Patrick Vale has created “Empire State of Pen“, an incredible time-lapse video of himself drawing a remarkably detailed account of the Manhattan skyline from the Empire State Building.
The photos were captured using his iPhone over the course of 4-5 days. Although condensed into just 90 seconds, this video gives one a greater understanding and appreciation for the level of detail involved in creating a drawing such as this.
