From Dark and Scary to Sleek and Modern: A Complete Basement Makeover! Looking at these 'before' photos, it's almost impossible to picture this subterranean space as the home of anything other than a few hundred man-eating spiders. Almost... until you throw a complete renovation and an awesome sense of style at the problem. While we were busy making water walls and firefly jars, homeowners Anthony and Naomi Cataldo spent the majority of their summer gutting their basement, installing HVAC systems, and pouring concrete. The massive amount of work, sweat, and more work paid off - their dark and scary basement is now a sleek and modern den!
The whole renovation is chronicled start to finish on their blog 21 Port, so hop over there for the full tale. And of course, a big ol' "great job" to Anthony and Naomi! I'm always a sucker for a good makeover (home related or not), so it's safe to say that this basement renovation is blowing my mind!
I've been following this renovation from Nicole Balch, a talented designer and big-deal blogger (Making It Lovely, anyone?) , since she first unveiled the "before" photos in November. Fast forward a few months (and what I can only imagine were more than a few late nights) and you have what you see before you: a total basement renovation complete with art on the walls. I've never renovated a home before, but completing something of this scale in a single Winter seems like a big feat, am I right?
One of the features I love most is the octagon-shaped tile used in the bathroom and laundry room. It's such a fun, playful detail that adds a lot of personality to the space! To read about the whole process, including fantastic design boards and a break down of everything that went into it (and more photos, of course), check out Making It Lovely! Before & After: A Bright and Sunny Office Redo! This small home office was in a sad, styleless state with its pale blue walls, uninspired flooring, and a mishmash of furniture. The after is anything but! Though small, this space gets ample sunlight, a feature that homeowner Kim Johnson (of Desire to Inspire fame) wanted to emphasize with white floors, walls, and ceilings.
To make her home office even brighter, she added a collection of colorful furniture and accessories. The combination of stark white and bold hues results in what may be one of the cheeriest home offices ever! For loads more photos and info on all the details of this transformation, check out Kim's post on Desire to Inspire! Wedding photographer Christa Elyce's home office lacked focus and creative energy, something she felt embarrassed about when meeting with clients. But, with the help of a stylist and a few money-saving tricks, she was able to transform this space into a true reflection of her personality and artistic vision! Check it out below! This soft and serene palette matches Christa's photographic style perfectly, while the romantic English garden-inspired decor helps create a tangible reflection of her brand's identity.
In other words, a win-win for Christa and her clients! So many, in fact, today we get a 2-fer. Check 'em out. Christine took the sorry-looking piece above to funky town: I love the next one for exactly the opposite reason I love the first one.
As design*sponge might say, it's a perfect makeunder. With the paint gone and a simple upholstered seat added, the chair goes from granny to graceful. For more great makeovers, visit design*sponge. Many of the "before and after" projects we feature are stark contrasts: obvious improvements that border on jaw-dropping (fantasy playroom or party garage, anyone?). So today, I'd like to present a makeover where the "before" isn't necessarily bad, just a different style.
Ashley Campbell is a talented photographer, blogger, and an avid DIYer with a playful style and an eye for design. She's had a chalkboard wall at the base of her stairs for over two years but recently decided she needed a change. One day and a few rolls of wallpaper later, she had an entirely fresh new look! (Check out more photos from this makeover on Ashley's blog Under the Sycamore.) Personally, I think both versions look great (though I do have a favorite), but I'm curious which you like best. Now that's a staircase: 11 eye-popping designs. Hawaiian-themed The stairs leading to the master bedroom in this contemporary condo in Wailea, Hawaii, were designed to look like grass blowing in the wind and to mirror the softness of the rest of the home. "We wanted to put the right stair in the right home," says David Shuler, vice president of Seattle Stair and Design, which created the staircase. "In this home, you could look out the window and see nature, how beautiful it is. We were hoping to capture the feeling of movement, of the breeze and the wind.
" This Hawaiian-themed staircase was a technical challenge, too. The process took about three months, and the cost was in the six figures, Shuler says. Read: Creating beauty and shelter from trash. Writable – Table With Writing Surface by Tianyu Xiao. Write on a Table The Writable is a fun and interactive look at how we can spark up the conversation around the coffee table. Three flip panels at the centre house chalkboards on the underside with a chalk discreetly held in place.
I love the way it changes the outlook of a simple structure to something more eloquent. Definitely a conversation starter! Designer: Tianyu Xiao. Underground Dwellings. Get closer to nature by living in an underground home built from sustainable materials I’ve always wanted to live in an underground dwelling because it’s the closest I’ll ever get to living like a Hobbit, and it seems like the perfect place to go in case zombies attack.
Most importantly, underground homes are very eco-friendly and are built directly into the earth, which means they take up less construction material and produce less waste. Plus, they just look cool! Here are 4 underground homes that get my “thumbs up” for being truly green and innovative: 1. This earthen home designed by KWK Promes has a grass roof that absorbs water and helps to regulate temperature inside the home. 2. Designed by Dutch architecture firm SeaRCH and Christian Müller Architects, this beautiful underground home located in a Swiss village has rooms that wrap around an interior courtyard, and they all get flooded with natural light. 3. This low impact woodland home was built in Wales by Simon Dale. 4. Living-cum-Dining Inspiration.
Most city dwellers live in modest size apartments which don’t have enough room for an independent dining room. For those of you looking to accommodate these two rooms in a constrained space, this post should serve some inspiration. These visuals by conceptual designer Orlando Toro show excellent examples of spaces that integrate living with dining. Bright splashes of color and large graphic prints dominate most these spaces and they portray a less serious side of modern design with focal points that set a rich whimsical tone.
Scroll to take a playful ride through some funky free-spirited living spaces… Orange is the predominant accent color for the walls in this living /dining space. This graphic accent wall is funky but not overpowering. This orange sofa makes it known where the boss sits in the room. The living room furniture is monochromatic like the kitchen/dining area, but they are both complimentary. This open plan has an overall gray color scheme which ties everything in seamlessly. Fairy Tale Cottages. Okay here is something different. Cottages houses like what we feature today have been romanticized since the early fairy tales of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel and have a way of infinitely reminding us of gingerbread houses, and cookies, and sugar! What makes a cottage so distinctive from other small homes is its dark thatched roof, and the way it envelops the cottage like melted cheese.
(funny how cottage cheese looks nothing like this) These homes were traditionally built by a waterfront and made out of logs or other natural materials. Also known as a cabin, they were used as a way of modest country living, but are now more popular as weekend and summer homes for city dwellers who are looking to get away. So the next time you stay in a cottage estate for your summer vacation, remember who inspired you! Design*Sponge | Your home for all things Design. Treehouses are more popular than ever, as play spaces for children but also as luxury hotel (and even house) designs for adults.
Some of the most fantastic plans and ideas can be traced to specialist designers and builders – and pictures of their work can provide some of the best inspiration (as well as an informal visual guide) for do-it-yourself recreational, residential and commercial tree buildings. Blue Forest is one such company, but far from the only one. Their specialty seems to lie somewhere between playful little fantasy structures and big educational spaces for children engaged in wildlife observation, forest ecology and related nature-oriented pursuits. The trick is to find a balance between safe and fun – railings are a must, as are sturdy supports, but whimsy and asymmetry help make these places feel more organic and engaging for younger visitors in particular. Some are like mansions, fortresses or castles – just set up on stilts instead of sitting on the ground. Tree Houses: Educational, Stylish and Sustainable. Man Builds Massive Ewok Village Replica.
