Update: I've created a live visualization of this algorithm, so you can see it in action - see Marriage Sort, a Visualization. Two weeks ago, a link showed up on Hacker News on how to (mathematically) select the best wife. Tongue firmly in cheek, of course. The key takeaway from the article is that knowing only the relative rankings of items in a sequence (and assuming you can never go back to a previous one), you can maximize your chances of selecting the maximum one by letting N/e go by and then picking the next one that's better than all those.

Further, to maximize your expected value you only need to let the first √N - 1 go by. After rattling around in the back of my mind for a couple weeks, yesterday this tidbit coalesced into an actual Idea. Could I turn this selection routine into a sorting algorithm? And thus, Marriage Sort was born. Algorithm One pass of the Marriage Sort. In pseudocode: Here you can see this algorithm working on a randomized array.

Fake+virus.bmp. Dynamic Periodic Table. Fab@Home - Make Anything | Fab@Home. Eureqa | Cornell Computational Synthesis Laboratory. Eureqa is a breakthrough technology that uncovers the intrinsic relationships hidden within complex data. Traditional machine learning techniques like neural networks and regression trees are capable tools for prediction, but become impractical when "solving the problem" involves understanding how you arrive at the answer.

Eureqa uses a breakthrough machine learning technique called Symbolic Regression to unravel the intrinsic relationships in data and explain them as simple math. Using Symbolic Regression, Eureqa can create incredibly accurate predictions that are easily explained and shared with others. Over 35,000 people have relied on Eureqa to answer their most challenging questions, in industries ranging from Oil & Gas through Life Sciences and Big Box Retail. The R Project for Statistical Computing. Physics Lecture Demonstrations. Compiled and annotated by Donald Simanek The internet has many sources of lecture demonstrations, particularly of demos suitable for large lecture courses. I list just a few. Often the university sites exist primarily for internal use, listing equipment and demos available to physics professors teaching large sections of introductory courses.

They usually give lists of required equipment, they don't always give much information about setup, effective presentation and explanation of the physics. In my little collection of demos I have included many that are appropriate for smaller classes and classrooms. I'm in the process of improving and refining this document, and intend to include more illustrations, discussion of the underlying physics, and presentation suggestions. How and why to present demonstrations Does the demonstration fit into the story line of your lectures? To do a demonstration without explanation and discussion is pointless. What does it demonstrate? Showmanship tips.
