DIY Paper Feathers. A few weeks ago I was helping my friend create her hat decoration for the Kentucky Derby party we were going to be attending together.

DIY Paper Feathers

We made over-sized paper flowers in bright pinks and plums and added some huge paper feathers into the mix to finish the over-the-top look. They were so pretty I knew I had to create a post for you on making a smaller version of these simple paper feathers. You can use them for gift toppers, a wedding boutonniere, put a few in a shadow box to hang on your wall, or. . . make a paper feather wreath for your summertime decor.

Stay tuned for the wreath post later this week. Origami Toys. Star Box. I suppose it isn't exactly the right time of year for stars and lanterns, but I've got a paper folding fascination at the moment and so was drawn to a project I had wanted to do back in Autumn.

Star Box

During last lantern season I was looking everywhere for instructions to make these beautiful paper lanterns and couldn't find them anywhere. I ended up purchasing a lantern that was already made and since I've been struggling with some difficult folds and designs of other paper crafts, I decided to unfold the seemingly simple lantern I bought and figure the thing out for myself. Like all traditional origami, no glue or cutting (once the basic outside shape of the paper is made) are required. Origami Basket. Have you tried making this basket and found that the handles get in the way?

Origami Basket

That’s how I feel. Then you could try the following version as it opens up the basket much wider, which I found was possible when I made some extra folds. Sassafras: technique tuesday with marla. Hey everyone!

sassafras: technique tuesday with marla

I'm back today with a fun technique that shows you how to fold your papers to create these really cute boxes. They're easy to assemble, require no glue and can be made from one sheet of paper and a flag banner. I'll admit that I did not invent these little boxes. My friend had something similar on display in her home but it was larger and had a little paper vignette inside. I took the concept, scaled it down and created a template to fit an 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper that could go through the printer. I scored all of the straight lines, cut around the outside and creased the folds.

I punched a hole at the tip of each triangle and threaded ribbon through the holes while folding the sides up. The result are these cute little boxes that can be filled with whatever you'd like! Packaging Templates. I’m not sure how I discovered this awesome collection of packaging templates but I’m glad I did!

The majority of you that voted wanted me to work in paper (such anguish -- haha!) , so I did. I'm not quite sure how I ended up with this version, but it certainly wasn't my first attempt. Surprisingly, the biggest challenge was making something that would be a compliment to the outer frame and not be overwhelmed by it. A couple of my initial designs were too delicate or small and seemed to disappear inside the ring. Another challenge (one which I face with all tutorials) is that I wanted to create something that would be very easy to replicate and still look interesting.

Materials Cardboard ring (this one in particular is from a roll of painter's tape) White paint Brush White card stock Red card stock Push pin Red embroidery thread Glue Craft knife Cutting mat Metal Ruler Paper trimmer (optional - if it is used, it will eliminate the need for the last three items on the list) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Teardrop holiday ornament. Our hotel room needs to look holiday-ish (at least for the kids' sake) and I thought a series of ornaments would do the trick.

They'll pull double duty because we'll be able to add them to our tree once we get home. What I came up with is extremely easy to make and it only requires very basic materials—a good thing since that's all I have right now. Materials- Two colors of letter sized paper- Scissors, craft knife and ruler, or paper trimmer- Glue (Tacky glue was perfect because it dries so fast) There are two different ways to make this ornament.
