Curation is a Means to an End, Not the Objective. Posted on February 14, 2011 by william Image via Wikipedia Any hype period has its share of buzzwords. Curation is one of those buzzwords today. It’s probably one of the most used, misused and abused words when it comes to discussing the future of news and digital content. The flurry of curation platforms has amplified the attention on the act of curation itself. But curation is only a means to an end, and not the end itself. Curation with a purpose and benefits is a powerful catalyst to engaging users around your content. Curation can take several forms: 1) Curating for yourself. 2) Curating for others. 3) Crowdsourced curation. 4) Social curation. At Eqentia, curation is all over our platform’s capabilities. We support the four types of curation, although with #4, we focus on surfacing Twitter Favorites and Google Reader starred or shared items. Digital curation is sitting at the intersection of two larger topics: Content Marketing and the Future of News.

The Future of News Curation | Fit to Print. Josh Sternberg examines the role of curating the news: Over the past few weeks, many worries about the death of journalism have, well, died. Despite shrinking newsrooms and overworked reporters, journalism is in fact thriving. The art of information gathering, analysis and dissemination has arguably been strengthened over the last several years, and given rise and importance to a new role: the journalistic curator. The concept of curating news is not new. One can look to the supply-chain process of a news organization to see that several roles (editor, managing editor, etc.) have curation as a core competency; that is, the organizing of information filed by reporters into a deliverable packages for readers.

Social media: What’s the difference between curation and journalism? Digital Curation Conference. Last December I had the opportunity to attend the 6th International Digital Curation Conference in Chicago, IL.

The conference was a super fantastic two day event. Reviewing my notes there were lots of excellent presentations -- a few that stood out were: Robin Rice (presenter) - "Research Data Management Initiatives at the University of Edinburgh". Robin mentioned the concepts of high and low curation: High curation would be labor intensive and require human intervention (metadata creation would be a good example).Low curation would be automated (for example checksums or file format validation). As Dartmouth College Library moves forward with digital preservation these terms and concepts will be helpful in our conversations.

Catherine Ward (presenter) - "Making Sense: Talking Data Management with Researchers". I also participated in a pre-conference, Digital Curation 101 Lite. These notes just scratch the surface of the conference. Written by Barb Sagraves. Real Curation Requires Effort, Point of View | Optaros.com. StyleKouncil: new "closet curation" consultancy in SF. Photos by Peter Samuels Since I was 14, I've dressed like, well, I'm 14. My uniform has been t-shirt, hoodie, jeans, and sneakers or boots. Thing is, I actually like to dress up. But I don't really know how. Until a month ago, I had a (small) closet packed with nice clothes -- or what I thought were nice clothes -- that I had acquired over the years but basically never wore.

And had mostly forgotten. Why did they do all this for me? I'm proud of Kelly and Kat, even as I get impatient while they scour thrift stores in search of the perfect Steve McQueen Baracuta jacket for me. As many of us know, in the social media marketing game content is king! Without anything to Tweet about or post about on Facebook our communities would fall by the wayside and our customers would stop listening to us. For most brands, the first question that must be answered before starting a social media strategy is “Where do we find good content to post about?” Creating content can be very expensive and time consuming. Most marketers cannot rely on their own content alone to fill an editorial calendar and to keep the conversation moving forward.

Instead, you have to play the role of curator to ensure people find value in following your brands’ feeds. At Uptown Treehouse, we are responsible for reaching technologists and software developers on behalf of our Microsoft clients. Amongst the two communities that we manage on behalf of Microsoft we are responsible for 20 Tweets and 5 Facebook posts every day. Egypt curation on Twitter shows opportunities, challenges for journalists | Curious on the Road. During the uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa, Twitter has become a major source for news from the region. One of the most noted Tweeters on the topic is Andy Carvin, senior strategist at NPR (see stories on the Nieman Lab and the New York Times, for example). From six in the morning to 11 at night, he collects, shares and follows tweets about the region, often from eyewitnesses.

With this flood of information, how does he filter what to pass on and where to research further? In an interview with PBS Newshour (above), Carvin explained that he knew bloggers in Tunisia and Egypt before the protests, and thus was able to follow the narrative from the beginning. He “pulled together a list of people I knew … a base of maybe half a dozen people that I had known and followed for a number of years so I knew they were reliable,” he told the Newshour’s Hari Sreenivasan. Building a network While not immediately reliable, Carvin says at least you know who is talking to whom. Content Curation – It’s What’s for Breakfast These Days. It’s a rare morning that I don’t start out by looking at the news. No, I no longer get the newspaper delivered (it’s been years, actually), and I don’t usually flip to the front page of nytimes.com either.

These days I’m most likely to grab my iPhone (often while still in bed, if truth be told) and log on to smartr. This cool app brings me my Twitter stream, but curated to only include links and to strip out Foursquare checkins and other non-news stuff. Smartr then presents those links to me as a news feed. Smartr is just one of many tools helping end users manage their ever-growing content streams. Understanding and utilizing content curation is important for brands too. I recommend that my clients go “beyond the broadcast” and provide content in Facebook and Twitter which becomes a valuable resource to followers – going beyond only news or specials from the company.

New Curation. These are two short posts with a number of great insights: The Three Forms Of Search…And The Rise Of Curation Spam “There seems to be three forms of search emerging as Internet users try to deal with the tsunami of information and the increasingly effective techniques of spammers. The first form of search is Google, and this will continue to be important, as much from habit, and as much as there isn’t much of a choice. The second is tapping into your own socal network to find what you need. Also, there is a less trust in “peers” as a recent Edelman survey found, and more trust in “experts.” The third way to search is by looking at content that has been curated by “experts.”

“Curators derive a pleasure from their activities, and it is also a form of altruism to collect the best information, and that’s why the product of curation is usually well thought out and highly relevant.” “Machines are good at aggregation, but aggregation is not curation.” Read them! According to a number of predictors, and my friends, 2011 is going to be the year of curated video. The old, algorithmic approach is out, and instead we’ll see audiences flocking to videos selected for your viewing pleasure by friends (in the case of Facebook) and experts (maybe even from YouTube).

Yes, it looks like "curation" is bound to be the first big buzzword of 2011. But when it comes to video, before there was curation there was programming. The kind that big network honchos would do. Take Fred Silverman, for example. He made Saturday morning cartoons a must watch for the juice-box set in the ’70s, and then built first CBS and then ABC into prime-time juggernauts, launching such shows as "The Waltons," "All in the Family," "Charlie’s Angels" and "Starsky and Hutch.

" Back when he was curating network TV, there were only three networks to watch. Even though many of the principals are similar, what worked for network TV won’t drive web video to success. Until now, these services have been free, but with the addition of newcomer Ongo (see “New Services Popping up Quickly”), pay-for-play services are joining the mix. Why will readers pay for a service to curate and deliver their news when they can get services for free through any desktop or mobile apps? This is more than a trend to watch – it’s the future of content delivery. As goes delivery, so goes content creation – are we prepared as a community of Health PR professionals for the brave new world?

A recent conversation about some stiff fines for one guilty party prompted my thinking.

What about curation? Jamie Beckland says, “Content curation is the process of reviewing and filtering articles and blog posts from across the web. Keeping it all social media-like, Beckland stirred my thinking about the “retweet” (repeating someone’s Twitter post on your Twitter account) calling it, “The most basic form of content curation… By selectively retweeting important news from other people, you’re curating a stream of information that’s branded as your own, but built on the ideas from the community of people you follow.” #2: Content Curation Leads to Insight.

Content curation. An interesting aspect of the culture of sharing on social networks is that of content curation. This is the act of pointing your followers to content from other people. Anyone who sometimes uses Twitter to send people to an interesting blog post or news article or video that they did not create is curating content. A retweet is a form of content curation too.

Essentially the idea is that you find things that interest you and share them. If you become known as "always finding the good stuff" people will eagerly follow you even if you don't do much in the way of original content.
