Ambient music is said to evoke an "atmospheric", "visual"[2] or "unobtrusive" quality.[3] To quote one pioneer, Brian Eno, "Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.

Ambient had a revival towards the late 1980s with the prominence of house and techno music. Technical difficulties delayed the start of The Cure’s headlining performance at Spain’s Bilbao BBK Live festival on Thursday night. So, to kill time, Robert Smith performed a solo acoustic set featuring renditions of “Three Imaginary Boys,” “Fire in Cairo”, and “Boys Don’t Cry”.
