Super3 Research Process. Questioning Toolkit. Essential Questions These are questions which touch our hearts and souls.

Questioning Toolkit

They are central to our lives. They help to define what it means to be human. Most important thought during our lives will center on such essential questions. What does it mean to be a good friend? If we were to draw a cluster diagram of the Questioning Toolkit, Essential Questions would be at the center of all the other types of questions. All the other questions and questioning skills serve the purpose of "casting light upon" or illuminating Essential Questions.

Most Essential Questions are interdisciplinary in nature. Essential Questions probe the deepest issues confronting us . . . complex and baffling matters which elude simple answers: Life - Death - Marriage - Identity - Purpose - Betrayal - Honor - Integrity - Courage - Temptation - Faith - Leadership - Addiction - Invention - Inspiration. Essential Questions are at the heart of the search for Truth.

Big questions open up big spaces for information, while little questions open up little spaces. The size of the answer is predicted by the size of the question. Suppose that a bug specialist (an entomologist) comes to speak in your Life Science class. After giving a presentation, the entomologist opens the floor for questions. Note what happens when students ask little questions instead of big ones. In the left column, four different students ask little questions, and they get barely a trickle of information from the entomologist. Students need to recognize simple to more complex questions: Do- and be-verb questions often evoke yes-or-no answers. Note how different types of questions lead to different levels of answers on Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Being a science teacher trained to appreciate inquiry teaching, content area reading, and conceptual change theory; being an avid reader of science fiction; being a movie and tv fan; and being an explorer of the internet, I have collected a few items that I consider useful for fostering critical thinking.

Many ideas will do triple duty in that they also create teachable moments, and frequently motivate students to learn more. I want to say that they enable more effective classroom management, and in some ways they do. But, I have found that hands-on teaching requires its own set of classroom management skills and so I do not offer the ideas as a panacea for controlling a difficult class.
