Ferguson Disgrace: Police Fire on Unarmed Crowds, Attack News Trucks. Online Community Management Interview with Erica McGillivray. Today I’m happy to share an interview I did over email with Erica McGillivray. Erica is a die-hard geek who spends a ridiculous amount of time being nerdy (her words, not mine!) , both professionally and personally. At Moz, she's the senior community manager and helps wrangle a community of over 400,000 members, co-runs the annual MozCon conference, and works on whatever else is thrown her way. She's also a founder of GeekGirlCon, a nonprofit run by volunteers that celebrates and supports geeky women with events and conventions. In her spare time, Erica's a published author and has a comic book collection that's an earthquake hazard. We’re all secretly jealous of the community that Moz has built over the years. Let’s hear from Erica how they did it. We’re so impressed with the online community management you do on the Moz blog as well as with YouMoz.
We also, especially with the size of community we have, believe in moderation of our comments and having a community etiquette guide. Slamsocial1 : When should you post on ... Big Data - Music. NYPD's Twitter photo contest backfires with images of aggressive police force. The New York Police Department attempted to harness Twitter to drum up support today, but things haven't exactly gone as planned.
Earlier today, the official NYPD Twitter account asked followers to tweet photos of themselves with NYC police officers under the hashtag #myNYPD — but so far, many users have jumped on that hashtag to flood it with images of police aggressively apprehending apparent suspects. So far, these are hardly the friendly images the NYPD was hoping for. While it's hard to say if the force used in many of the pictures tagged with the #myNYPD hashtag is justified or not, the overall sentiment is clearly one in defense of citizens against an overly brutal police presence.
Either way, there's little doubt that the anti-police co-opting of the #myNYPD hashtag is picking up mainstream attention — it's one of the top trending items on Twitter right now. It's a lesson in social media that the department is likely not to forget anytime soon. Slamsocial1 : Affluent customers want service... The rich tweet, too. Answering customer service questions over social media can be fast and effective.
It’s also what the wealthiest customers want. When companies debate what importance to assign to customer service using social media (aka “social care”), our recent research finds that the wealthiest customers use it the most: 57 percent among those earning more than $200,000, and 56 percent among those earning $150,000 to $200,000 (compared to 43 percent for an average social media user). The wealthiest consumers also prefer social care to phone, and even in-person customer service – 48 percent for the $200,000-plus segment, and 29 percent for the $150,000-to-$200,000 segment. Despite this evidence, many companies that cater to the wealthiest customer segments either avoid social care altogether or don’t take it seriously enough.
To counter the risk of alienating wealthy clientele, senior management should focus on three areas: CM1 Conference For Community Managers Returns May 22, 2014 | Dx3 Digest - Canada's Digital Marketing, Advertising and Retail Resource. Beyond tweeting: Demystifying the social media editor. While the popular perception of the social media editor is a fresh-out-of-college intern sitting on Twitter all day, the now-ubiquitous role is more complicated than that — and more important.
“Twitter and Facebook have become far more powerful tools for getting traffic, so the shift has become more focused on how to take advantage of social media to improve the site’s traffic and readership,” said Jeremy Stahl, Slate’s social media editor since 2010. There’s no one-size-fits-all social media editor role at publications. In some cases, the social media editor is in charge of finding new distribution outlets; in others, they are doing hands-on reporting using new crowdsourcing tools. Digiday spoke to several social media editors at both established and up-and-coming publishers to learn what they find to be misunderstandings outsiders have of what the role of social media editor is. Liz Plank, executive social editor at PolicyMic, argued the same idea: Social media can be hard. How Nordstrom uses Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Google+ It’s been a while since I added to our series of posts looking at how major brands use social, so I thought it about time to pass judgment on another unsuspecting marketing team.
On this occasion the brand in question is fashion retailer Nordstrom which it turns out has a rather good social strategy, particularly when it comes to Pinterest. This article follows on from similar posts looking at ASOS, Coca-Cola, Nike, H&M and Burberry, among others. Enjoy! Facebook Nordstrom has attracted some 2.4m ‘likes’ to its Facebook page, which has a particularly attractive header image. It posts several updates per day with a surprisingly relentless focus on directing traffic to its ecommerce store. The standard format is to post an attractive product image with a line of text and a hyperlink to a category page on Nordstrom.com.
Dating back to the beginning of this year there have only been a handful of posts that weren’t product focused, such as one that commemorated Martin Luther King Jr. day. Twitter. Now With 75% Of All Traffic Coming From Apps, Pinterest Revamps Its Mobile Website. Pinterest is today launching a new version of its mobile website, which the company says is “complete rewrite and redesign” aimed at better integrating the features found in Pinterest’s native mobile applications, like its more useful pins (those embedded with additional information) and related pins (personalized suggestions).
The changes will bring the mobile web experience more on par with the Pinterest on the desktop and its native software running on smartphones and tablets. Today, the company is seeing more than 75% of its usage come through mobile applications,* but, when asked, Pinterest declined to break down how much of that traffic comes from specific platforms, like iOS or Android.
That stat doesn’t include mobile website usage yet, but when it does, the percentage will go up even more, Pinterest says. Mobile has been a rapidly growing force for Pinterest. In 2013, mobile grew 50% from the beginning of the year to become more than three-fourths of all usage. What to expect in 2014: Adapting to Facebook's Edgerank changes. Are you caught up with the most recent online marketing changes, updates and theories? Wishpond’s James Scherer, in this four-part series, will examine the most influential changes that have happened in the past six months, and how those changes affect you and your business on a daily basis. This week, Scherer will discuss what Facebook’s EdgeRank changes means for marketers. In Part 1, Scherer looked at the rise of social media optimization. Part 2 covered Content Shock — what it is and why it matters. You may have noticed that your business’ organic reach on Facebook has declined recently.
This is primarily due to an update to the EdgeRank algorithm (the bit of immensely complex code that determines how many people see your posts). What they’ve done is devalued text updates from brand pages (this happened on Jan. 21, so don’t worry if you haven’t heard about it yet); previously, Facebook actually rewarded posts that embedded links within text, instead of what they call a “link share.” Social media shake up: Big changes coming for Canadian businesses. According to Twitter, the most discussed topics on the network in 2013 included low-budget movie #Sharknado (about a tornado of sharks), the birth of the #RoyalBaby and the 50th-anniversary of campy British sci-fi TV series #DoctorWho.
However, the real social media story last year requires digging a bit deeper. Beneath its glittery exterior of pop culture memes and cat GIFs, social media has proved an increasingly potent business tool. A recent report from BMO Financial Group shows 57% of small businesses in Canada now use social media, a 42% increase from last year. And the way tools such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are being applied are increasingly sophisticated. Business owners are now using social networks to track sentiment about their company and their competitors, to recruit top employees and to sell their products and services. At stake is more than just a few Likes or Facebook friends. Twitter’s Mobile Business Now At 184M Monthly Actives And 75%, $165M Of All Ad Revenues.

Observers yesterday were pondering why Google “wants a $3.2 billion thermostat?” As Lex's Robert Armstrong askedFinancial Times reporter Joseph Cotterill about the company’s purchase of Nest Labs Monday — knowing full well that his answer would delve into the huge potential of “The Internet of Things.” Cotterill responds with two cautionary words: “Internet fridge” circa 1998. “Samsung and LG would sell you these refrigerators which would tell you when your milk was running out, as if you were somehow incapable of looking into [it] yourself,” Cotterill reminds us.
“And so that kinda really bombed.” The difference today is that the market is much bigger and wider and smarter than it was when those devices were introduced. “The networking giant Cisco predicts a world where 50 billion devices could be connected to the Internet by 2020,” writes Avi Itzkovitch in the September issue of Ux Magazine. Not that the Internet Fridge has gone away over the years, of course. 3 Social Media Trends You Should Know About. Tensions are often high for retailers, consumers, and marketing departments alike during the busy season, as everyone works to stay on top of demand, trends, and the competition. With the right amount of planning, careful consideration, and a dash of sugar and spice, holiday marketing campaigns on social media can generate buzz and even get your brand in front of potential customers who you may have missed otherwise.

Blonde Anne of Green Gables: Sultry in Summerside A new collection of the classic Canadian series about an 11-year-old freckled redhead orphan girl turned up on Amazon.com at the start of 2013 with a book cover that featured an image completely inconsistent with the character described between the covers. The parties responsible, who published the public domain book through the CreateSpace independent publishing program, were never identified — although the outraged attention, combined with the fact that the estate of author Lucy Maud Montgomery has some legal protection over the use of Anne’s image, has led to the edition no longer being available. Krista Erickson, who previously worked at the CBC, went from appearing as the Sun Media newspaper chain’s SUNshine Girl on the day of the channel’s launch to the subject of the highest number of viewer complaints in Canadian history for her attack on dancer Margie Gillis about the value of government grants for the arts.
