The New Year’s Carnival is a multifaceted celebration of life, rite of renewal, and festival of music, involving minstrel troupes, Malay choirs, and Christmas bands. Many outsiders think that the minstrel troupes’ Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade through the city is the only major Carnival event. The Carnival also has a less public side that involves street marches through the neighborhoods from which the troupes, choirs, and bands draw their members.

Open Book Cape Town Opens September 21st. James Cairns performs Dirt at the Baxter Theatre. When asked to review James Cairns one-man show “Dirt”, I went with much anticipation as I had heard that it was quite the masterpiece. I headed for the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio to see for myself. Dirt is a story of 3 friends, Sam the egotistical TV soap actor, Grant the new father trying to deal with his wife’s postnatal neuroticism & Wayne the slightly dysfunctional, sad creature who everyone can sympathise with. They travel from Joburg to Cape Town to the funeral of their recently deceased friend Jerry. Also in attendance is Tom, the geriatric Staffie dog. Their story follows them from first hearing the news of Jerry’s death, the road trip to Cape Town and the funeral itself.
All three of these strange but wildly funny characters, including Tom the dog, are played by the brilliantly talented James Cairns. Cairns slips in and out of each character seamlessly.
