Scientists 3-D Print With Human Embryonic Stem Cells. 3-D printers can produce gun parts, aircraft wings, food and a lot more, but this new 3-D printed product may be the craziest thing yet: human embryonic stem cells. Using stem cells as the "ink" in a 3-D printer, researchers in Scotland hope to eventually build 3-D printed organs and tissues.
A team at Heriot-Watt University used a specially designed valve-based technique to deposit whole, live cells onto a surface in a specific pattern. The cells were floating in a "bio-ink," to use the terminology of the researchers who developed this technique. They were able to squeeze out tiny droplets, containing five cells or fewer per droplet, in a variety of shapes and sizes. To produce clumps of cells, the team printed out cells first and then overlaid those with cell-free bio-ink, resulting in larger droplets or spheroids of cells. After being squeezed out of a thin valve, the cells were still alive and viable, and able to transform into any other cell in the body, the researchers say.
R'ha - A Short Sci-Fi Film That Could Make Hollywood Jealous [VBideo] Steven On January 11, 2013 What if, instead of man versus robots it was an alien life form that was attacked by the robotic life that they had created? This is the premise behind an awesome short science fiction film called R’ha that was directed and animated by 22-year-old Kaleb Lechowski and I gotta tell you Kaleb could teach Hollywood a thing or two. R’ha is definitely one of those short films that should have the big budget boys drooling and bidding like crazy to get their hands on this film and the talented Kaleb. UPDATE: As we hoped for it seems that R’ha has been picked up by Hollywood. via Geek Tyrant. Regular Exercise Seems to Guard Against Migraine - Headache and Migraine Center.
Study showed it worked as well as medication in preventing attacks. By Mary Elizabeth Dallas, HealthDay News WEDNESDAY, Oct. 12 (HealthDay News) — Exercise can prevent migraines just as well as drugs or relaxation techniques, a new study from Sweden suggests. "Our conclusion is that exercise can act as an alternative to relaxations and [the migraine drug] topiramate when it comes to preventing migraines, and is particularly appropriate for patients who are unwilling or unable to take preventative medicines," study lead author Emma Varkey, a physiotherapist and doctoral student at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, said in a university news release.
In the study, Varkey and colleagues evaluated 91 migraine patients over the course of three months. One-third of the patients were asked to exercise for 40 minutes three times each week. The study, published in the current issue of the journal Cephalalgia, found that the patients in all three groups experienced fewer migraines. Wind Map. An invisible, ancient source of energy surrounds us—energy that powered the first explorations of the world, and that may be a key to the future. This map shows you the delicate tracery of wind flowing over the US. The wind map is a personal art project, not associated with any company. Scientists Discover The Oldest, Largest Body Of Water In Existence--In Space. Scientists have found the biggest and oldest reservoir of water ever--so large and so old, it’s almost impossible to describe. The water is out in space, a place we used to think of as desolate and desert dry, but it's turning out to be pretty lush. Researchers found a lake of water so large that it could provide each person on Earth an entire planet’s worth of water--20,000 times over. Yes, so much water out there in space that it could supply each one of us all the water on Earth--Niagara Falls, the Pacific Ocean, the polar ice caps, the puddle in the bottom of the canoe you forgot to flip over--20,000 times over.
The water is in a cloud around a huge black hole that is in the process of sucking in matter and spraying out energy (such an active black hole is called a quasar), and the waves of energy the black hole releases make water by literally knocking hydrogen and oxygen atoms together. The new cloud of water is enough to supply 28 galaxies with water. - StumbleUpon. The Island Where People Forget to Die. A Controversial ‘Cure’ for Multiple Sclerosis.
