Should Startups Focus on Profitability or Not?
I find it amusing when a journalist writes an article about a prominent startup (either privately held or preparing for an IPO) and decries that, “They’re not even profitable!” I mention journalists here because they perpetuate the myth that focusing on profits is ALWAYS the right answer and then I hear many entrepreneurs (and certainly many “normals”) repeating the same mantra. I chatted with a young guy last night about his new startup idea. He's got a vision for a social commerce app with a few cool spins on it.You may know Dan Porter as the CEO of the free multiplayer gaming and chat platform, OMGPOP, which specializes in making social games, like Puppy World, for example. What you may not know is that, for the last year, Porter has been managing and curating a free, weekly newsletter called Inside Startups. The mission of Inside Startups, Porter says, was to move people from larger companies and corporations into up-and-coming startups in an effort to galvanize the New York City startup scene.

Nous n’avons pas les mêmes valeurs… | Création d'entreprise ! | Guilhem Bertholet
Toute entreprise qui commence à grossir met en place à un moment un jeu de « valeurs clés », affirmées plus ou moins habilement, transpirant plus ou moins à l’extérieur de l’entreprise. Why? Because, to paraphrase the Columbia University economist Jagdish Bhagwati, Wall Street, which was originally designed to finance “creative destruction” (the creation of new industries and products to replace old ones), fell into the habit in the last decade of financing too much “destructive creation” (inventing leveraged financial products with no more societal value than betting on whether Lindy’s sold more cheesecake than strudel).
