Basic. Daisy Stitch. Houndstooth. Hello 2012!

Houndstooth

Let’s start you off right: With a free knitting pattern! These are some lovely little fingerless mitts I am very pleased with. They’re knitted in DK yarn which makes them both warm and super-quick to make. The yarn is Sirdar Balmoral (which is selling for a song over at Black Sheep Wools) but really, any lovely woolly DK yarn will do. The handwarmers have a proper thumb gusset so as to keep the pattern going over the entire main body. Knucks. Note: When making fingers, label each finger as you complete it.

Glove [make 2] Thumb Loosely CO 14[16, 18] sts. Distribute evenly between needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist. Work in stockinette st until work measures 0.75[1, 1.25] inches, or desired length. Break yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail, and place all sts on waste yarn. Make a note of how many rows you have worked, so that the second glove may be worked exactly the same way. Little Finger Loosely CO 10[12, 14] sts. Ring Finger and Middle Finger Loosely CO 12[14, 16] sts. Jacoby. You can make 2 sets of our self patterning gauntlets from a single ball of Lang Jawoll Aktion.

There’s something that just makes me sad about spending 20+ hours on a knitted item, and then wearing it where no one will see it. However, I loved the pattern enough that I decided to adapt it into a beautiful pair of fingerless gloves. This pattern is available as a free download on Ravelry, and you can get it by clicking here. You will need size 1 US DPNs and ~200 yards of fingering-weight yarn. The pattern as written provides a comfortable fit for hands 5.5 inches around the wrist and 7 inches around the largest part of the knuckles.

This pattern looks fantastic in variegated yarns, but I have also included instructions for working the gloves in a stranded pattern using two solid or semi-solid yarns. This is a quick knit, requiring about 4 hours per mitt. (What, you thought I only made one pair?) Lovely Lace Mitts in Lush. Roku Mitts. These mitts are knit using slip stitches to create the colorwork pattern.

This year, my project of choice is fingerless mitts. With a little determination and the perfect yarn/pattern combination, I can finish a pair in a day. The yarn can't be too thick or thin and the pattern can't be too complicated but must still be detailed enough to hold my attention. This week's pattern, the Twisted Stitch Mitts from Amy McElwain, is the perfect pairing. Verdigris. Using method shown in linked article (see Pattern Notes), CO 36 sts onto one double-point needle.
