Evolutionary Principles applied to Problem Solving. There is nothing particularly new about Evolutionary Solvers or Genetic Algorithms.

Evolutionary Principles applied to Problem Solving

The first references to this field of computation stem from the early 60's when Lawrence J. Fogel published the landmark paper "On the Organization of Intellect" which sparked the first endeavours into evolutionary computing. The early 70's witnessed further forays with seminal work produced by -among others- Ingo Rechenberg and John Henry Holland. Evolutionary Computation didn't gain popularity beyond the programmer world until Richard Dawkins' book "The Blind Watchmaker" in 1986, which came with a small program that generated a seemingly endless stream of body-plans called "Bio-morphs" based on human selection. Since the 80's the advent of the personal computer has made it possible for individuals without government funding to apply evolutionary principles to personal projects and they have since made it into the common parlance.

Pros and Cons. Processing, Grasshopper and Optimization Solvers. These days, a lot of professions are overwhelmed by what seems like excessive amounts of data.

Architects are in this boat as well, or at least we should be. With the simulation tools available to architects, we can take a napkin sketch and work towards validating the design’s performative capabilities in a short amount of time, all while generating an entire database of information at our disposal. As a sort of salve for the end of another superheated week, and as an escape option for the weeks ahead, below is a video of scuba divers at Austria's Green Lake park. “During the winter,” to quote the ever reliable Wikipedia, “the lake is only 1–2 m deep and the surrounding area is used as a county park. However, during the spring, when the temperature rises and the water melts, the basin of land below the mountains fill with water. The lake reaches its maximum depth of around 12 m from mid-May to June.” Seeing all that amazingly crystal-clear water and that submerged meadow freshly efflorescent, there's no wonder why it's a popular diving spot. I had other plans, I quibbled, and it was way over in Woodhouse for heaven’s sake. Not my part of town at all. But then she said “it looks slightly bonkers . . . and you do like walking.” I didn’t know whether I should have been chuffed or chagrined with her assessment of my character but I sat back for a moment then thought, what the hell, why not. A walk did seem preferable to my other plan which mainly consisted of sitting in front of my laptop getting increasingly annoyed and emotionally contorted for agreeing to do something I really ought never to have said yes to.

I didn’t have time to do too much checking what I was letting myself in for. The Pack Horse was buzzing when I got there. Fortunately the psychogeographers were not hard to spot. When we finally set off down the Woodhouse Road there must have been more than thirty of us. Wonderful! Psychogeodata 4. New media art, electronic music, hacktivism. Greg J. Smith.
