Aquaponics.me.uk - Contact Us. The Aquaponics Gardener: IBC Tote Tank Aquaponics. I know it's been awhile since I last posted to the blog, but I have been very busy planning the inside of the greenhouse. I know the blog is about Aeroponics, but I just had to start out with some Aquaponics adventures to set the stage for future Aeroponics endevours. So, without further ramblings, let's dive in.

I searched our local Craigslist coverage area and found an inexpensive source for 275 Gallon IBC ( International Bulk Container) tote tanks ($50 ea.) which were single use food grade totes that contained liquified corn sugar (not corn syrup). This stuff was really sticky and messy, having the consistency of molasses, but without the sugary smell or taste When looking for these types of containers, always look for food grade, or ask the seller what the previous contents were before committing to a purchase, some IBC's are used to transport hazardous chemicals or petroleum products, not good for the fish, plants or you.

On to the cage/frame prep. Here is the finished product. (27) Homesteading Self Sufficiency Survival. Recycled Solar. Five Tips for Maintaining Your Edible Garden « aHa! Modern Living. Mobile Greenhouse Runs on Waste Vegetable Oil, Teaches Kids Sustainable Practices (Interview) © Compass Green Prior to the Compass Green project the only time a DIY greenhouse could have been considered mobile was when they were poorly constructed and a strong wind carried them off. After a successful Kickstarter fundraiser (which TreeHugger covered last year) Nick Runkle and Justin Cutter transformed an old truck into a mobile greenhouse, and have become vanguards of the mobile gardening trend. This isn't the first glamorous job the humble box-truck has held.

It came to Nick's attention when he saw a picture of the truck on his brother's computer. The truck's sides had been cut out and replaced with Plexiglas. It turned out that the truck had spent some time as a mobile art gallery, and was left sitting in a lot on Long Island by the artist when she moved to Berlin. © Compass Green Justin(Left). Justin had just finished creating a teaching farm with John Jeavons, and the realization that he'd been "teaching to the choir," as he puts it, had just crept up on him.

Beginning Permaculture - Ideas for Renters Permaculture Forums, Courses, News, Information. So you’re renting and think why bother working on the garden when you’ll only have to leave. In my experience it’s always worthwhile. For one you may end up staying longer than you think, and much can be done in a short time for not much money. When it is time to move on I always think of my gardens as charity for the next person and for the earth and its creatures.

There is great saying — whoever “plants a tree, or sows a field and men and beasts and birds eat from it, all of it is charity from him” (Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2320), so whoever or whatever is fed from your plantings is in your favor also. Pots are of course a great solution for some plants. Some plants actually grow better in pots. If you are using potting mix I have found it is always much better to use a good quality one, and also mix in some compost. Another idea is to plant fruit trees in the nature strip in the street next to your house — you can always come back to harvest after you’ve moved on! So get planting! Composting Guerrilla Style! Groutas/CC BY 1.0 The culinary use of flowers dates back thousands of years to the Chinese, Greek and Romans.

Many cultures use flowers in their traditional cooking — think of squash blossoms in Italian food and rose petals in Indian food. Adding flowers to your food can be a nice way to add color, flavor and a little whimsy. It’s not uncommon to see flower petals used in salads, teas, and as garnish for desserts, but they inspire creative uses as well — roll spicy ones (like chive blossoms) into handmade pasta dough, incorporate floral ones into homemade ice cream, pickle flower buds (like nasturtium) to make ersatz capers, use them to make a floral simple syrup for use in lemonade or cocktails. For our on-line guide, we are dividing tree sculpture into two distinct approaches. The second is taking freshly harvested prunings, twigs, branches, or young trees and shaping them into woven art. Of all the types of living sculpture we present in this on-line guide, the first approach to tree sculpture probably requires the most horticultural knowledge and long term patience. Axel Erlandson’s tree circus is an amazing horticultural undertaking. Woven branch art is easier to create in many regards, since it involves the weaving and interlacing of flexible stems and branches. Because of my busy lifestyle, my lawn and garden beds tend to look a little more unkempt and a little less manicured than I’d like to, the point where I expect to receive disapproving glares from neighbors. However, this lack of regular pruning, mowing, and trimming produces an unexpected bonus: more natural areas that are welcoming to wild creatures. There are a number of ways in which you can make your yard more hospitable to wildlife, and many of them require very little effort or maintenance: 1.

If there’s a way we can shorten our to-do list, we’ll take it. This week’s project, a no-fuss recycled windowsill herb garden, has knocked watering the plants off our list. Self-watering planters like these aren’t a new idea; we remember our own childhood craft books that taught us how to poke holes through Dixie cups or invert two liter plastic bottles to grow our own little bean garden.

This grown-up version is much better looking and works great for small herbs and plants. We used beer bottles for ours, but you could make a larger garden with wine bottles too. Although this project may take a little more effort than your average windowsill garden initially, the pay off is worth it for us: we get to usefully recycle bottles, we get fresh herbs we don’t have to dote on, and we get a sparkling window display. Quick Grow Indoor Garden Centre Articles. Hydrogen Peroxide and Horticulture By Bryce Fredrickson Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is a clear sharp smelling substance very similar in appearance to water (H2O). Like water it is made up of Hydrogen and Oxygen, however H2O2 has an extra Oxygen atom in an unstable arrangement. It is this extra atom that gives H2O2 its useful properties. H2O2 has been used for many purposes including cleaning, bleaching, sterilizing, rocket fuel, animal feed treatment and in addition many miraculous claims about its health benefits have been made. This article isn't about any of these; instead it will concentrate on horticultural applications.

H2O2 is of great use for both hydroponics and dirt/soilless gardening. 1. 2.Over Watering Roots require Oxygen to breathe and low levels are the main cause of almost all root diseases. In a Hydroponic system the cause is a more direct simple lack of oxygen in the solution, this may be from inadequate circulation and/or aeration. 3. 4. 5. 6. VERMAPONICS! This video will show you techniques to sheet mulch your lawn in order to transform it for better use. Why maintain a conventional lawn anymore? These days they are just rather useless, decorative but mostly unimaginative and energy/water wasting. Using these techniques, the transformation from the manicured boring green to beautiful natural grasses, or flowers, fruits and vegetables can be started at any time of year, but fall is best. You can create a landscape that uses much less water and fertilizer than a regular lawn, and be eating food from your front yard. -- Bibi Farber This video was created by Bay Friendly Landscaping and Gardening For more Homesteading Skills videos, click here See the complete catalog ofnext world tv videos About Us | Privacy Policy | Contact. Salmon Aquaponics - NEW: Portable Farms™ SALMON Aquaponics Systems » Portable Farms™ How can you grow a cold-water fish in a fish tank, and raise warmth-loving plants in the same system?

Carefully, with a skillfully designed system. Portable Farms Ltd. Is pleased to announce the launch of their new design, Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems. You might be surprised how many calls and emails we receive from people who are interested in growing salmon in aquaponics systems! We receive many many calls of people who are passionate about raising salmon and vegetables for home and commerical purposes. THE WAIT IS OVER! Portable Farms Ltd has been in the aquaponics research arena for forty years and has spent most of that time telling those who inquire about growing salmon that it is very expensive to combine salmon and aquaponics because of the different heat requirements within the system.

Salmon, tomatoes and blueberries are the top three requested items that show up in wish lists for aquaponics. The ideal water temperature for salmon is below 54 degrees F (12C). 1. 2. 3. 4. French intensive vegetable gardening - Au potager. 05/22/2002French intensive vegetable gardening The French are pastmasters at getting the most out of their potagers. Virtually every yard has a spotless vegetable garden. Often, it occupies most of a small yard. And it is planted so tightly you can hardly imagine how the gardener manages to walk between those closely packed rows. What's more, there never seems to be a trace of a footstep between those immaculate lines of vegetables, which always appear freshly cultivated. Perhaps this intense approach to gardening is responsible for generating the incredible variety of French gardening tools.

It's not unusual for a very small space to yield enough fresh vegetables for a family of four. Faced with much less available space than most American gardeners, the French have learned to push the envelope of plant proximity. In my potager in Normandy, I cram and jam plants in the same way I always have, since I started vegetable gardening back in the 70's. The Sundial Primer - Equatorial Sundial. Equatorial Sundial Equatorial Sundial: a dial in which the dial plate is parallel to the equatorial plane and the polar-pointing gnomon is perpendicular to it.

Equinoctial Sundial: another (historical) name for an equatorial sundial. Equatorial Plane: the plane through the Earth defined by the equator. The equatorial sundial is the simplest of all the sundials. It can be made without mathematical calculations and can be used at any latitude. It can be used to determine the hour lines for most other types of sundials when using graphical design techniques.

The sundial has hour lines equally spaced at 15° intervals around the gnomon. Figure 1: Equatorial Sundial Template (CAD) For the equatorial sundial to be used at any latitude the user must only ensure that the gnomon points to the celestial pole. Figure 2: Equatorial Sundial As the dial plate is parallel to the equator, there are periods of time when the sun is above the dial plate and others when it is below.

The growing season is upon us, and this year why not design your backyard (and front) to harvest and store water to grow fruit and vegetables in a beautiful edible landscape Many homeowners in Calgary have converted their lawns into a food forest. A food forest is a beautiful productive landscape that you can install in place of your lawn. It is called a “food forest” not because of tall trees and the like, but rather because all the plants (and animals) in the system are arranged in the same kind of pattern that defines forests.

Think about a forest for a minute and ask yourself: “why don’t forests ever need to be watered?” We can use the same patterns that define forest ecologies in the design of landscapes that provide us with food, energy and shelter. The purpose of permaculture is really simple: to create landscapes (and communities) that can feed, shelter, and provide us with our energy needs. Let’s now getting into how this works and how we can start doing it. Functional Design. Google Image Result for. Permaculture articles by paul wheaton. Wild Thyme Farm Permaculture. Mollison - Permaculture: Design For Living. Bill Mollison is a living legend. He’s known as the genius of permaculture, "the David Brower of Australia," or a crusty old curmudgeon, depending on the source. But whether it’s glowing admiration or sneering dismissal, reaction to Mollison is invariably strong. He is clearly one of the most interesting specimens of the human species – which he has spent years studying from a naturalist’s behavioral perspective.

He passed through Seattle recently with a film crew shooting a documentary about the far-flung successes of permaculture, a radically new (or, some have said, radically old) way of gardening, designing, and living sustainably by cooperating with nature. Alan: Permaculture is a slippery idea to me. Bill: I’m certain I don’t know what permaculture is. Alan: Why "eerie"? Bill: There’s no other book about design for living. Another thing I find extremely eerie is that when people build a house, they almost exactly get it wrong.

But then, at least half of every city is wrong. Masanobu Fukuoka's Natural Farming and Permaculture | Permaculture &Alcohol Can Be A Gas. - StumbleUpon. Permaculture, a Beginners Guide.
