Stigma management

When a person receives unfair treatment or alienation due to a social stigma, the effects can be detrimental. Social stigmas are defined as any aspect of an individual's identity that is devalued in a social context.[1] These stigmas can be categorized as visible or invisible, depending on whether the stigma is readily apparent to others. Visible stigmas refer to characteristics such as race, age, gender, physical disabilities, or deformities, whereas invisible stigmas refer to characteristics such sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, early pregnancy, certain diseases, or mental illnesses. When individuals possess invisible stigmas, they must decide whether or not to reveal their association with a devalued group to others.[2] This decision can be an incredibly difficult one, as revealing one's invisible stigma can have both positive[3] and negative[4] consequences depending on several situational factors.

Gamified Syllabus – EDrenaline Rush

First, some backstory: last summer, I had the chance to attend the Serious Play Conference at nearby George Mason University and spend a week delving into the transformative power of classroom gamification. Yes, it’s easy to dismiss game-based instruction as just the latest in a long line of passing educational fads. But don’t laugh: the same game-based approach to classroom instruction is being used by college professors like Dr. Anthony Crider at Elon University, the United States Military, Fortune 500 companies, multinational healthcare providers, and billion-dollar pharmaceutical corporations. Distance Learning Hack: Breakout groups

I found that when students began learning in Google Meet, many of them suddenly got shy! I’m not sure what it is about the screen (though I’m sure there are plenty of psychology and sociology articles that could tell me if I looked), but I really wanted to get my students talking to one another again. Cue in: break out groups! Step 1: Download a Chrome Extension called “Mute Tab.” It does exactly what the title says it does– it mutes the tabs in your browser window! Pandemic #QRBreakIN – EDrenaline Rush

Let’s face it: during their time away from school, our students will play HOURS of Fortnite, Mario Kart and Minecraft — often failing hundreds of times in their quest to reach the next level of play. But when they hit a single wrong answer in our online classrooms, instantly they shut down and give up. So what if teachers could capture the same excitement you’d expect from a “living video game” to liven up our approach to online lesson planning? While far too many take-home assignments are merely an easily copied, “one-size-fits-none” box-checking exercise in rote memorization or blind compliance, #QRBreakIN is tailor-made for 21st century student engagement through modular learning and asynchronous teaching.

Although a strong Spanish accent is usually easier to understand than a similarly strong French or Portuguese one, the pronunciation can cause considerable strain for the listener and seem somewhat harsh and flat.

More importantly, Spanish speakers often have listening comprehension far below their other skills. School English lessons in most Spanish-speaking countries also tend to focus much more on reading and grammar than speaking and listening, and so pronunciation work will both help redress the balance and be considered worthwhile by students. This article will focus mainly on pronunciation problems that cause miscomprehension, including some attempt to prioritise the entries in each section.
