Pearltrees

Top-Down: A New Approach to the Semantic Web
Earlier this week we wrote about the classic approach to the semantic web and the difficulties with that approach. While the original vision of the layer on top of the current web, which annotates information in a way that is "understandable" by computers, is compelling; there are technical, scientific and business issues that have been difficult to address. One of the technical difficulties that we outlined was the bottom-up nature of the classic semantic web approach. Specifically, each web site needs to annotate information in RDF, OWL, etc. in order for computers to be able to "understand" it. As things stand today, there is little reason for web site owners to do that. The tools that would leverage the annotated information do not exist and there has not been any clearly articulated business and consumer value.Wissensmanagement Methoden/Werkzeuge

Of the companies that presented at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference, one of the more interesting ones to me was Storify , one of a number of “curation” services that are trying to make it easier for bloggers or journalists to pull together real-time news from Twitter and other networks and make them into a coherent narrative. Whether the ability to do this can become a compelling business proposition remains to be seen, but anyone who’s tried to quickly gather information about a news event from social-media sources — even just out of personal interest — is likely to see the potential of the service. It’s a little light on features, but it is still in beta mode.Storify: Make stories using social media

At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference this week, one of the new tools to emerge — besides, that is, Lark , the new app that wakes you “silently, without a jarring alarm” — was Storify . Founded by Burt Herman (a former AP reporter and founder of the journotech meetup group Hacks/Hackers ) and developer/entrepreneur Xavier Damman , the platform promises a new way to leverage the real-time power of social media for creating stories.I take on consulting engagements that align with my personal research and writing interests. Most of my consulting work is/has been in the area of technology marketing and business strategy. I take on select writing projects as well.

Trailmeme is a new kind of publishing. Trails -- visual maps of Web content -- allow you to go from feeling overwhelmed and anxious by the flood of disorganized real-time Web content coming at you, to a sense of control and mastery. By blazing trails you can create meaningful, annotated patterns and evolving stories out of Web content.
Trailmeme
This post was guest written by Scott Norris. Trail blazing enthusiasts rejoice. Blazing just got a lot easier. Trailmeme’s new blazing browser integrates a Google search engine. Everything you need now sits on the page in front of you: A search engine tab allows you to discover, name, and add URLs to your trail; a markers tab lists your saved markers; a third tab allows you to manually add URLs to your trail; buttons for other tasks such as viewing and editing the trail map, managing access, and publishing are one click away. Inspired by a documentary on the 911 Memorial –and encouraged by the ease of trail building with the new feature — I decided to put a trail together featuring some of the Internet content that has been generated around the tenth anniversary of 911 (see it here ).
