Supersize Shoo-Fly Quilt Tutorial

Read her introduction here, and look for more from Malka later in Quilting Month II when she shares tips for improvisational quilting! A friend once said, “The problem with subtlety is that nobody really notices it.” When you’ve gone to the time and expense of crafting a quilt, you probably want that quilt to have impact and catch people’s attention. One easy way to create big impact with your quilts is to play with the scale of simple, graphic blocks. To illustrate this point, I’ve super-sized a block pattern from my book, Color Your Cloth: A Quilter’s Guide to Dyeing and Patterning Fabric. In this version of the quilt, each of the four blocks measure about 35” x 35”, with the whole quilt measuring 70” x 70”. Pat-sloan-scrap-happy-block-1-shoofly. JingleBellRock-Pattern. Free Patterns. You’d never know it at first glance but this is SUCH an easy quilt to make…my favorite kind.

Summer Slice Quilt Tutorial

This is a beginner friendly quilt, but I would recommend having some experience with simple piecing and matching seams. This quilt is 57 inches by 71 inches. You’ll be working with some bias edges (fabric cut on the diagonal against the grain) so I highly recommend starching your fabric before you cut. You’ll need to cut: 80 rectangles 6” x 8”, and 80 strips 2 1/2” x 8”. I cut all of my strips from various prints and yardages, but I estimate you’d need about 16 FQ if you were buying fabric just for this. Sew a strip onto the side of each rectangle with a 1/4” seam allowance. Count out 40 of the 8” squares from above. Lay them on the cutting mat like so with the strip at the bottom, and make a diagonal cut from bottom right to top left.

Cut all 40 squares like this, keeping the top and bottom triangles in separate piles. Gather all of the triangles with the large strip portions. Medallion_star_pattern. AQS-article-406. Free Pinwheels Quilt Pattern... Carnival Pinwheels

My own choices are bright, and remind me of the spinning pinwheels we see at summer carnivals and fairs. Two blocks are used to sew the quilt. Block components can be assembled in several ways, but we'll use a combination of flying geese and half square triangle units to create the patchwork. The orange and red patches that form diamond shapes pop out as strong diagonal pathways. To make pinwheels and stars emerge, choose brighter fabrics for those spots, and then sew the pathways in more muted colors. Color Value for Quilters can help you make choices. No actual diamond shapes are used to create the quilt... form when half square triangle units are joined. As shown, the quilt finishes at about 64" x 88". Quilting Fabrics and Other Materials Blocks look different, but are actually very similar. Quilt Patterns, All Free... Of Course. Beach Ball Baby Quilt

This is Jess from The Elven Garden with my first recipe for Moda Bake Shop. I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could make a quilt using just a jelly roll (Sphere by Zen Chic), and I came up with the Beach Ball lap/baby quilt. It does use a fat quarter of background solid as well, but other than that a jelly roll is all you need! This quilt is made using large equilateral (60 degree) triangles, arranged so they form hexagons across the quilt top. The layout options for the hexagons are unlimited - if you would like to have a play with some other layout options, you can download and print triangular graph paper here. Today we're so excited to share the finished quilt top tutorial from the Star Sampler Blog Hop held recently here on the blog! The quilt top features 9 star blocks made by various designers/bloggers, all using Ro Gregg's Marblehead Venetian Glass fabrics with a little solid white added in. (If you missed any of the star block tutorials from our blog hop, scroll down to the bottom of this post for all 9 links.)

Before we begin the actual tutorial, we'd like to share some insight on our process: Our blocks showcase a variety of colors because designers were given the option of using any fabrics in the Venetian Glass collection (which includes 3 colorways!). We opted for a scrappy-looking pieced sashing that would help tie all the colors in the blocks together. TUTORIAL: Film At Five Quilt. Another example of the fun to be had with scraps!
