While I was writing this essay, I was reminded of an anecdote from Plato's "Republic". In Book One, Socrates tries to persuade Polemarchus, who is dragging Socrates against his will, to release him.

Polemarchus remarks, "How are you going to persuade us if we don't listen? " A relevant anecdote when I am faced with writing an essay about a modern thinker and a theme like Havel and 'antipolitics'; both of which advocate a 'new way of thinking' or more specifically a 'new way of thinking about politics'. While I imagine this essay as somewhat of a personal exercise, I hope that it is not in the end a solitary one. Was 'antipolitics' a success or a failure? Pulling our Platonic parallel further, 'antipoliticians,' are not interested in being "masters over others for the sake of averting harm. " Havel does not look at totalitarian regimes from the vantage point of 'classical politics' (his words). Copyright 1995 Alexa O'Brien. Hey President Obama! Dear patriots, rabble-rousers, revolutionaries, On Saturday thousands of us will occupy Wall Street. We will wave our signs, unfurl our banners, beat our drums, chant our slogans … and then we'll get down to business and hold several people's assemblies to decide what our "one demand" will be. Shall we demand that President Obama reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act; outlaw flash trading; impose a 1% tax on all financial transactions? These are good ideas but not very energizing. How about we demand the revocation of corporate personhood? Feels a bit too abstract. Many Americans don't fully grasp what's at stake with this one.

We could demand Obama set up an American Democracy Reform Commission tasked with ending the monied corruption in Washington? Most Americans know that Washington is awash with corporate money and undue influence and would like to see democracy vibrant again. What if, try as we might, we just can't come up with only one demand? For the wild,Culture Jammers HQ. Art03c07.pdf (application/pdf Object) Zoning - Zoning Tools. A Privately Owned Public Space (POPS) is an amenity provided, constructed and maintained by a property owner/developer for public use in exchange for additional floor area.

POPS are primarily achieved as-of-right through incentive zoning, although some POPS were created by way of a special permit granted by the City Planning Commission. Privately owned public spaces have been encouraged in the city’s high-density commercial and residential districts as a means of increasing light and air and green space, and easing the hard streetscape formed by towering buildings bordered by concrete sidewalks. Since 1961, the Zoning Resolution has permitted different types of POPS, including residential, urban and sunken plazas, arcades, sidewalk widenings, open air concourses, covered pedestrian spaces and through block arcades.

Over the years, the requirements for POPS have been refined, providing greater design quality and more comfortable elements to meet the needs of the public. Zoning - Glossary. Glossary of Planning Terms This glossary provides brief explanations of planning and zoning terminology, including terms highlighted in the Zoning Handbook. Words and phrases followed by an asterisk (*) in the Glossary are legally defined terms in the Zoning Resolution of the City of New York, and can be found primarily in Section 12-10 of the Resolution for the complete legal definitions.

Accessory Use* An accessory use is a use that is incidental to and customarily found in connection with the principal use. An accessory use must be conducted on the same zoning lot as the principal use to which it is related, unless the district regulations permit another location for the accessory use. Air Rights (see Development Rights) Arts Bonus (see Incentive Zoning) As-of-right Development An as-of-right development complies with all applicable zoning regulations and does not require any discretionary action by the City Planning Commission or Board of Standards and Appeals. My reason for going there was to ask a question about family law that the Great State of California' Franchise Tax Board refused to answer because it weakened their legal case by even considering it. We must not just get rid of the IRS; We must also get rid of state tax offices. Can we fix this without removing an arm or leg of government? Ms. More... DHS Warning about Anonymous, US Day of Rage, and “Occupy Wall Street” An article published today in Computer World reports on a relatively unusual bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security’s National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center warning financial institutions about risks of attack, surrounding the planned September 17th protest “Occupy Wall Street.”

The article author claims that “Anonymous” has been using twitter to solicit assistance from disgruntled financial institution employees, to then exploit to damage those institutions. I can’t confirm or deny that claim. I will say that in my experience in observing Anonymous that if they want your password, they’ll give it to you. The most likely case is that overt criticism is being characterized as conspiracy, as part of the sickening trend wherein dissent is being labeled “terrorism.” I was also fortunate enough to speak with Alexa O’Brien, a journalist and social/political activist who is one of many helping to organize the USDayofRage (USDOR).
