Knowing What Students Know: The Science and Design of Educationa. Education is a hot topic. From the stage of presidential debates to tonight's dinner table, it is an issue that most Americans are deeply concerned about. While there are many strategies for improving the educational process, we need a way to find out what works and what doesn't work as well.
Educational assessment seeks to determine just how well students are learning and is an integral part of our quest for improved education. The nation is pinning greater expectations on educational assessment than ever before. At a time when traditional testing is subject to increasing criticism, research suggests that new, exciting approaches to assessment may be on the horizon. Knowing What Students Know essentially explains how expanding knowledge in the scientific fields of human learning and educational measurement can form the foundations of an improved approach to assessment.

Abstract Object technology offers tremendous possibilities for making the teaching of software much more effective, and more exciting for the students, than ever before. The present proposal suggests a redesign of the teaching of programming and other software topics in universities on the basis of object-oriented principles. It argues that the new ``inverted curriculum'' should give a central place to libraries, and take students from the reuse consumer's role to the role of producer through a process of ``progressive opening of black boxes''.

Joseph Bergin Pace University One Pace Plaza New York, NY 10038 USA jbergin@pace.edu The following fourteen patterns form the beginning approaches to a pattern language for Computer Science course development. They might have application to other fields as well. The patterns are not all at the same level of scale. Some speak to the overall course organization and some to very low level things.
The general flow is from large structure (semester courses) to small scale (daily activities). Some of the patterns have numbers assigned. At the end of the list of patterns I discuss how some of these might eventually fit together into a pattern language. The skeleton form of these patterns is prescribed by the original Pedagogical Patterns Project, though we have now moved on to other formats.
