A lot of kind, sweet, and friendly people have asked me, “What is the method you use to extract?” There are many ways to extract an image from its background and today we’ll be covering how to do it with the Pen Tool. Have you noticed this cute little icon on your Tool palette? Such a little guy yet he wields such power. While Pen Tool may sound scary, he’s really quite friendly. I like to think that extracting with the pen tool is just like cutting out an image with a pair of scissors. Let’s get started, shall we? First open up the image you want to extract. As we erase the background, we want to make sure that: a.) our lines are smooth, b.) all of the background has been properly removed and c.) to make sure we’ve gotten rid of any stray pixels. Create two layers and fill them with both a dark color and a light color.

Today I’d like to share with you a technique for creating portraits with a watercolor look. This is a fast and easy technique, and doesn’t use the somewhat difficult watercolor brushes that come with Painter. Instead, you can download and use the custom brushes I developed for these kinds of portraits. You can download them here. Unzip the file, and then copy both the folder “Bob’s WC Brushes” and the file Bob’s WC Brushes.jpg into your Painter brush folder.

Bob’s Soft CapBristle – a variation on the ever-popular Captured Bristle variant of the Acrylics category. Bob’s Soft CapBristle is used to paint the majority of the work, and then you’ll use the Edgers to feather out the edges.
